My new Yars I have a dilemma and I need some help. First a little background, I'm a Psych grad (B.Sc Hons.) Top of my class. Buch of other academic yada yada yada. I wanted to go for CSS (civil service) but after studying Psych for 4 years I'm in love with the subject and wana make it my profession.

That being said I'm from a middle-class fam and both my parents are educationists near their retirements, we do not have ZAMEENS and JAEDAADS to fall back on. We eat what we earn, like most of my countrymen and neighboring countrymen (even the world?).

Since the last two years of my studies my university has been visited by the Army, Navy and Air Force Psychs, they really need some good guys (to give you a picture every year there about 3-5 male psychs passing out and most of them not so good in terms of the subject).

I'm decided for a career as a military psych but for which arm? PAF, PN or PA? :( Can you guys help me a little bit?

I will keep my own observations for now and hear what you guys have to say.

Thanks and feel free to ask me anything

There is much scope for application of psych in the armed forces. Compared to western nations we have put relatively less focus on this aspect even though we have some of the most active field areas in the world and rigorous deployments which often tax our jawaans and personnel to a hitherto unseen extent. In my opinion its an under-researched area where significant gaps exist, I could be wrong though but one does not see the kind of studies generated by say West point in our respective nations on this topic. So go for it. Btw educationalists hunh? Same here. :)

As to which arm of the armed forces would be best suited by your service, that I cannot provide any view on since it is far too specific a topic although the PA itself might just end up being the best bet given the current scenario.

Its good to be middle class my man. The mind is unshackled from the riwaiti khaandan mentality that sadly persists in the said social class.

As I have seen, the Doctors/Psychiatrists/Psychologists from Army Medical Corps are posted to Navy and Air Force as well. I do not know if the PAF or the PN may be hiring some specialists for select jobs. My information is a bit dated though. However, if you need to gain experience, join Army as you may find more nut jobs because of its larger strength. Please do not take it in literal sense. :)

Thanks, Dill, I plan to churn out a lot of research on indigenous topics especially military psych, btw, your armed forces deploy them better than ours, I have a paper on it I will link it up sometime.

I wouldn't be too sure as to quantum of said difference. We have had quite a few issues pertaining to LIC zone deployments taking a toll on the jawan as evidenced by a handful of accidents every year. But yes, any data on the topic is welcome since this an area I have no particular knowledge about.:smart:

Na, Nassr, the Psychologists do not work under the AMC, the PAF and PN places them under the education branch they are inducted as 'Flying Officers' and 'Sub-Lieutenatnts' respectively. The Army Psychs too do not answer the AMC, the GHQ and AHQ have a Chief Psychologist who oversees the tailoring of intelligence tests that people who apply for the armed forces must pass and have the oversight of the ISSBs in the country. The Chief Psychs of the Army and PAF are Brigadier and Air Commodore respectively, the Navy has been trying to get her own Psych as Chief but the govt. has thwarted its attempts so far.

@jaibi .. i have this impression that army allied service people are not as good as civilian counterparts .. they dont have creativity as hirarchy and discipine removes it ...
i wont rate army doctors , nurses ever as good as civilian counterpart.. am talking about india
if you want an easy and isolated life then may be good for you.. otherwise try academic research or some civil job.

Actually the IA medical corps is rather a good. The things a field surgeon can do a normal doctor would suffer an aneurysm faced with the same situation.

For much of our AMC it is true too, hinduguy but I want to go for it because I feel like I can make a difference. Psychs are treated different by the military because they are paramount to the selection and the promotion of officers so the are treated better than the Army Education Corps officers who are considered the lowest in terms of hierarchy.

I would tend to agree with @Nassr . Check your information with the recruitment centers. It is been a while since I was in Pakistan Air Force but it used to be that ALL MEDICAL PERSONNEL were hired by PAKISTAN ARMY alone. Later after Training they are deputed to Navy and Air Force, but their Parent service remains Army and they can be recalled back to Army or sent to another Service for example, from Air Force to Navy.

BTW, in Pakistan Armed Forces medical Personnel are allowed to do Private Practice after their duty hours so a lot of Doctors and Nurses have evening jobs in the private sector after duty hours. So they have free housing and health facilities as well as an income from their main Armed Forces Job and most Moonlight for a second job in the evenings as private doctors and consultants.

Usually they move the Medic Core guys around different forces(I think its followed by all the Armies that follow the British standard). If Pakistan does not do that and if you have to stick to one force than I would not choose the Army.Since PA is involved in active combat you will have to deal with patients suffering from PTSD and its not a very fun thing to do.I would go with the Navy.Since they do post guys like you in ships and it will be really fun on the ocean.Airforce will be pretty dull I guess since you wont find much action there.Navy is the way to go if you are looking for action fun and less stress.

@Pakistanisage , sir, you have been in the PAF how would you comment on the service's culture (army, navy and air force compared) that's the only thing that's making me a bit choosy about the arm otherwise I know that this is the career I want to go for.

I've the PAF ad saved too on my system.

The PN is a sad state, they have had only 2 psychs selected since 2009, people don't apply there. I really feel our navy's underrepresented.

Sir, the PA allows Psychs to have a seat in the attached CMH if they are having a Clinical diploma. I personally do not want to go on that side. The PAF and the PN also offer the same facility.
