Sri Lanka's war hero stripped of ranks

COLOMBO: A Sri Lankan court martial on Friday stripped the general who spearheaded the army's victory over Tamil separatists of his military ranks after finding him guilty of involvement in politics while in uniform.

Gen. Sarath Fonseka's conviction, which had been widely expected, and sentence still have to be approved and signed by President Mahinda Rajapaksa.

"He was found guilty of charges and sentenced to dishonorable discharge from rank and service, pending the president's approval," a military source said on condition of anonymity. Another military source confirmed the sentence.

An official at the Presidential Secretariat said that "he had been cashiered subject to president's approval."

Fonseka, who has been held in military custody at navy headquarters, would lose his military status, including his four-star general rank and pension if Rajapaksa signs the document.

One of Fonseka's lawyers said he had not been informed of the court's decision but that it would be challenged if true.

Fonseka lost the presidential election to Rajapaksa in January before being arrested by the military on Feb. 8.

He then contested the April general election and became a member of Parliament, which won't be affected by the court's decision.

Fonseka and Defense Secretary Gotabaya Rajapaksa, the president's brother, led the military defeat of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam after 25 years of war in May last year.

unfortunately the military in Pakistan is above law especially the Generals they are untouchables.

Upholding the rule of law is the greatest cause. Unfortunately, since 1951 this country has seen unelected and non-state actors rule the roost directly or indirectly. A worthy lesson for all would-be adventurers.

His case has been marred by controversies and government's bias though. We should wait and see if the commentary suggests that the trial was unbiased.

Try to be honest for once.

The so called politicians are responsible for all the problems. To begin with they are relics of the colonial past - most were collaborators of the colonial regime and got their land holdings and other benefits from them.

secondly they are corrupt and dishonest to the core with no morals or vision beyond satisfying their lusts. the wanted an man of no integrity who would not only let them plunder and rape as they wanted but would assist them. Therefore they sought to put the most malleable person with no scruples in command. This is true throughout: Gen Ayub was among the most ineligible candidates; Gen Zia, doubtlessly one of the most capable political leaders in pakistan, was the juniormost and had a pathetic military record; Gen Musharraf "wrote" in his own "autobiography" that when he reviewed his file after becoming COAS he was surprised he made chief with his record.

Only when the politicals were at loggerheads did honest men become chiefs by default - witness Gens Kakar and Karamat.

This holds true for all institutions, the politicos, having no morals themselves seek dishonest corrupt people to serve their needs - judiciary bureaucracy etc.

The ascendency of "civilian" or "military" rule is a colonial concept and a political tool used by them manipulate the rest of the world. most states which have acheived some success have done so with some level of contol and planning witness Korea, Singapore China Malaysia. popular role is only now being permitted once economic success has been acheived. what is needed is men of integrity and character who are patriotic first and anything else next.

Did anybody introduce our history here? There are other threads for that.
