What's new

A Himalayan rivalry

China has only one formal ally with treaty obligation to defend it if it is attacked unprovoked. That's North Korea of course. but the public sentiment in China is that North Korea is rather untrustworthy. There is no formal treaty between China and Pakistan as allies, but both the Chinese people and the government consider Pakistan as the most trustworthy. Forsaking Pakistan for the sake of India is out of the question.

Both the Chinese people and the government consider Pakistan as the most trustworthy. Are you sure that is true?
North Korea is rather untrustworthy.Why?
In chinese there is a proverb:"With a ghost you talk like a ghost, with a person you talk like a person."

North Korea is rather untrustworthy.Why?

Do you even have to ask? North Korea is more of a liability than an asset. They don't listen to China any more, what did they do when China told them to stop causing problems in the peninsula? They just ignored it and developed a nuclear bomb anyway.

Even worse, the Chinese leadership knows that if North Korea collapses, then millions of North Korean refugees would stream over the border into China, and cause an enormous humanitarian and political catastrophe.

The good news is that Kim Jong-Il will soon die from old age. Hopefully his son will be more reasonable, and will stop trying to make East Asia into a war zone.

.
What happen between China and North Korea are just something like children games show others.

.
NK attitudes will get worse. Kim Il Sun have relationship with founding chinese ccp leaders. His son much less connection. Do expect the son of Kim Jong Il to be a spoiled kid.

Yes he will most certainly be spoiled.

But maybe that will make it easier to influence him.

Spoiled kids aren't very tough, they will quickly chase after rewards, and can be scared easily with threats of war. At least I hope that's how it will turn out.

Yes, I am sure. You need to read the history of the Korean War. Kim Il Sun started the war against Mao's advice and then China had to bail him out at the cost of some 200,000 Chinese lives. There is not even a mention of it in North Korean history books. What is even more despicable is that the North Koreans desecrated the graves of many of these fallen Chinese soldiers in the 60s.
Judging from the insignia, you (Tractor) currently reside in China. You only need to surf a few of the major online chat rooms to get a sense of how ordinary Chinese people feel about the Sino-Pakistan versus Sino-North Korean relations. Let me know if you make major discoveries contrary to my observation. In the meantime, I stand by the comments I made earlier.

First, let me infer that Chinese people are wellknown for their conformity.
You say those in online chat rooms are ordinary Chinese people ,of course they are.But they do not represent others.
In our real life you can hear much more "China&Korean are friends "instead "Sino&Pakistan are brothers."We are educated to let it happen like this from past to future let alone it's true or not.

My contention is that Chinese people regard Pakistan as much more trustworthy than North Korea. It is based upon my years of participation in online chat room discussions and the reading of Internet polls over the years. You do not seem to contradict my assessment of the public sentiment on the Chinese Internet at least, but your argument is that these people do not represent others. By your logic, how is it possible for your assertion to be valid? So far, other than your personal opinion you have not provided us any evidence to back up your claim.

On an official level, the Chinese government describes the Sino-Pakistan friendship as "higher than the mountain, deeper than the sea". That ought to tell us something. Even allowing for an element of hyperbole in a catch phrase like this, it is nevertheless worth noting that such a description is only used in the context of Sino-Pakistan relations. Show me another instance where the same description applies. I am positive there is none.

"higher than the mountain, deeper than the sea"I have never heard of it but these words just like"your achievements are higher than the sky, your kindness are deeper than the sea, never sunset within one's heart..."You know this is one of the most popular songs in the Great Culture Revolution which emerged more than 40 years ago.

My view would be to create a union between India and China and make reforms.

If you haven't heard if before, now you heard it. For your own enlightenment, please read President Hu Jingtao's speech in Pakistan during his tour of India and Pakistan a few years ago.
This is also going to be my final reply. I don't know what kind of education you've had, but it does appear that you are not particularly knowledgeable about Sino-Pakistan relations. In addition, your limited grasp of English also hampers your ability to make a coherent argument. I shall leave it at that.

It's awful you mentioned our national leader and as if I offended him.
I really do not think that my knowledge about Sino-Pakistan relationship concern with what kind of education I have had and I think you do know what I typed in occasion that I am not sure whether they were proper expression.

many overseas chinese think they're more "cultured" than the rest of us, whatever that means. don't worry about that.
