A failed Islamist military coup in Pakistan

Generally, such schemes for coup, are apprehended, at the planning stage. This has happened at least 3 times in Pakistan's history.

these guys tried their luck . why our forces think they are best managers ? while they were not trained to be managers and admins ? shaheen air / askri bank / are two failed managed project as i remember run by forces .

Unapproved coup attempts have happened. They think being military top tier leaders they wont be spied upon lolz. Reality is they are all monitored. The question is why mild punishments? Why not hang them all? Maybe they dont want to set a precedent for when there is an approved coup.

Thing is... These people say they will put Sharia law in place and make it so they arent any borders as per what Islam says... However as we have seen by the Taliban in 96-01 and even today, they say they will enforce true sharia law but end up enforcing some next level tribal variant of it.

If they truly want to enforce Sharia law then so be it. But if its the manipulated tribal variant which strays from the path of Sharia law then no.
That's why it won't work, they all have some weird twisted cultural version of Islam. Look at the contribution of Mullahs to this country so far without all of that, now imagine if they were actually dictating laws.

All laws should be based upon logic and you should be able to justify them with reason, even if you take it from the Quran.

Their idea would be to claim anything, even if they don't have any way of being able to logically justify it, and pass it off because it's "God's word" and you should listen to it regardless. Just like the other thread where they wanted to give 20% extra marks in school exams to people who memorised the Quran, in fields of study which were completely unrelated...

Country just needs to see development, and the fanaticism will be weaved out itself.

That is the reason why it would never be sustainable.
Whose version would be the right version, and because religious people are all as unbending and unreasonable as each other there would be constant oppression, resulting in constant infighting, turmoil and violence.
Sharia is but a fantasy that hopefully will never come to pass in Pakistan.

Ignorance = poverty = radicalism = suffering

A failed coup hidden for 30 years.
Really?

Since when do things in Pakistan remain a secret for so long, there is always rumours and talk or something, this is the first time I'm hearing this.

Possibly religious idiots with fantasies who were caught, but to call it a failed coup is a bit rich and misleading.
This particular coup against PPP gov't wasn't hidden. It was in news at the time.
Does this imply that successful coup of 1999 was done by anti Islamists?
Yes, truer words have rarely been spoken.

when did askari bank fail? last I know they were in profit...shaheen air was a private venture...

ISI has almost always unearthed coups, and in most cases the Prime Minister was timely informed. It's the unnecessary power center that the seat of the COAS is, why most coups were successful.

:p: really ?sad to know that you are unaware

The airline was established and started operations in December 1993. It was formed as a project of the Shaheen Foundation, Pakistan Air Force. In October 1994 it was designated as the second national carrier of Pakistan and in February 1995 began international operations, with a scheduled service between Peshawar and Dubai. When the airline started it operated a fleet of leased Tupolev Tu-154 aircraft on most of its domestic flights. Shaheen Air International (SAI) was given the status of being the "second national airline of Pakistan" during the first couple of years of operation, however this status is no longer recognised.

In July 2004, the airline was sold to new management was changed when it was taken over by TAWA International Inc. of Canada. The new chairman of Shaheen Air, Khalid M Sehbai has made a foreign direct investment in Shaheen Air with the objective of taking the airline back to its successful past.

OK, But I'm old enough to remember the death of Zia, this couldn't have been that serious or big of a threat or it would have remained in our memories.
I do think Pakistanis have a habit of over blowing things, I recognise it could have been the thinking of some fantasy military men, but to call it a coup attempt is still a bit rich.

Would have been Nightmare scenario for everyone I guess. Good that this was nipped.
