95 percent Pakistanis are moderate, says governor
LAHORE: Governor Lt Gen (r) Khalid Maqbool said on Sunday that 95 percent population of the country consisted of moderate people but they are being exploited by extremists. He was speaking at a seminar titled âInter-faith Tolerance, Justice and Process of Developmentâ organised by the Mir Khalilur Rehman Memorail Society in collaboration with the World Council of Churches. The governor said that Islam was a religion of peace and it taught respect of humanity, fraternity and harmony among all sections of a society.
He said it was the duty Muslims to promote peace in the world. âIslam teaches us equality, harmony, peace and respect for otherâs religions,â he added.
The governor said that the government under the leadership of President General Pervez Musharraf had been working for the betterment of minorities. He said that the promotion of inter-faith harmony was vital to ensure justice and development in the country.
He said that religious conflicts, social and economic inequalities problems were the main reasons creating unrest in the world. âNo religion allows aggression and peace and harmony cannot be restored in the world until all existing conflicts are eliminated,â he added.
He said that Pakistan was a peaceful country and its people disliked terror, injustice and intolerance. âA Muslim state not only ensures human rights but also takes care of animals and plants,â he added.
Speaking on the occasion, the Principal Officer of American Consulate in Lahore, Brian D Hunt, said that enlightened and moderate people could ensure prosperity and peace in the world.
