Jammu: Undeterred by the killing of a woman candidate by militants on Friday, people turned out in large numbers on Sunday to vote in Jammu and Kashmir, which recorded 82 per cent polling in the second phase of the panchayat elections, which were being held in the State after a gap of 10 years.

“The polling was totally peaceful, and people came out in large numbers to elect their representatives; 82 per cent polling was recorded in the second phase, which was two per cent higher than the first,” an official spokesman said.

The first phase had recorded 79.77 per cent.

The second phase of the 16-phase elections would decide the fate of 275 sarpanches and 2031 panches in 8 blocks of the State, the spokesman said.

Poll percentages recorded were 85 per cent in Kupwara, 86.95 per cent in Baramulla, 85.46 per cent in Ganderbal, 77 per cent in Budgam, 81.48 per cent in Kulgam, 77 per cent in Udhampur, 84 per cent in Samba and 83.40 per cent in Jammu.

Undeterred

Hasina Begum (40), a Panch candidate in the Charar-e-Sharief area of Budgam, was shot dead on Friday by militants, who had earlier given a boycott call. But the incident seemed to have had no effect on the enthusiasm of voters, as they turned up in large numbers to exercise their franchise, the spokesman said.

Although the turnout was low due to heavy rain in the morning, it picked up as the day wore on.

Following the Friday killing, the polls are being held amid heightened security. — PTI

It is nothing surprising in the polling percentages in Udhampur or Jammu considering these are heavily pro-India districts but the real good news comes from 85 per cent in Kupwara, 86.95 per cent in Baramulla, 85.46 per cent in Ganderbal (Sri Nagar) 77 per cent in Budgam which are militant infested states and are also pro-Separatists.

People are choosing
