The number of telephone subscribers has more than doubled -- from 36.5 million to the present 82.5 million -- in the last three years, the BTRC chairman said.
The number of Internet subscribers has also gone up from 4 million to 25 million during the period, he added.
"The number is on the rise through mobile phone and other services," Ahmed said.

Ahmed claimed 100 percent people and 99 percent areas were brought under telecom network in the last three years. "People across the country are now under mobile phone network," he said.
SATELLITE LAUNCH IMMINENT
The BTRC chairman said the process to appoint an advisory body to launch Bangladesh's own satellite is in the final stages. According to him, the government has approved the fund to launch the satellite, named 'Bangabandhu-1'.
Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) has collected Tk 121.904 billion in revenue from the telecommunications sector over the last three years almost three times the amount collated during the earlier opposition and caretaker government's tenures.
Talking about achievements of the incumbent government over the last three years, BTRC chairman M J Zia Ahmed (Retd) told bdnews24.com on Thursday that out of the total revenue collection, more than Tk 60 billion was collected only in the outgoing year. A lion's share of this money came from frequency charge during spectrum allocation, licence authorisation and licence renewal, he said.
BTRC officials said earnings from the telecom sector during the tenure of the BNP-led four-party alliance and army-backed caretaker governments were Tk 48.81 billion.
Ahmed said Tk 31.84 billion was collected from four mobile phone operators -- Grameenphone, Banglalink, Robi and Citycell -- as fees for spectrum allocation and 2G (second generation) licence renewal. He said around Tk 49 billion may be collected in the next year as licence renewal fee.
As licences of the four mobile operators expired in November this year, they paid Tk 31.84 billion as spectrum charge for the next 15 years. Besides, the BTRC chief said, approximately Tk 80 billion will be collected in revenue in the next year from 3G (third generation) licence authorisation.
The process for appointment of an advisory body for formulation of 3G licence guidelines is underway. The often-delayed 3G licence auction is likely to take place in June next year.
