80 pc of Mohmand Agency cleared of militants Operation Commander says insurgents getting foreign help

Operational Commander of Mohmand Agency Col Saifullah has said 80 percent area of the agency has been cleared of the militants by the Frontier Corps with the support of Political Administration and tribal elders. While briefing the media at the headquarters of Mohmand Rifles at Ghalanai on Wednesday, he said militants still hold 20 percent of the area which is near to the Afghan border. Political Agent Mohmand Agency Amjad Ali Khan was also present. The area near to the Afghan province Kunar is still some control of militants who are getting the support from across the border, Col Saifullah said. Elaborating the importance of the area in the recent operation against militants he said Mohmand Agency has been a transit area for the militants. It was the main transit hub of the militants who use to get and give equipment, ammunition as well as foreign help from this route, Col Saif said, adding that due to the proximity of the area to Peshawar it was also must to clear the area of the militants. The Commander Operation Mohmand Agency said a year ago the movement of FC was restricted only to daytime and most of the time helicopter was used for the movement. This headquarter was targeted by the militants who used to fire 28 to 30 mortar bombs every night. But as of today, after the successful operation by the Frontier Corps we are able to move freely not only in daytime but also at night, Col. Saifullah claimed. Briefing about the post-operation activities of the militants he told there were four Shariat courts established by the rebels, apart from terrorising the innocent tribesmen. Anyone who tried to stand against them (militants) was terrorised by them, but now the confidence of the people in FC has been regained, he said. He said the political administration and malik system has been restored in the agency. Giving the details about the successful operation, he said during last seven months operation, 245 militants were killed and 300 sustained injuries while over 800 were surrendered to security forces. Similarly, 20 jawans embraced Shahdat and 45 others sustained injuries while fighting against the militans, he added. Out of eight teshils of Mohmand Agency, five have been completely cleared from militants where people can make free movement even during night. But there are still pocket of resistance in three tehsils of the agency near Afghanistans border, Col Saif said. He after Eid the operation against militants in the remaining areas would be launched to clear the remaining pockets. Col. Saif said that among eight tehsils, Bazai tehsil was the most problematic because of its close proximity with Kunar province of Afghanistan. Col. Saif said that Peshawar-Bajaur Road, which was earlier in control of militants, has been cleared for traffic. While speaking on the occasion Political Agent Mohmand Agency Amjad Ali Khan said a total of Rs. 2295 million loss has been incurred by the militancy. The total losses incurred due to militancy and terrorism to Mohmand Agency is measured up to Rs 2295 million including Rs.500 million in social sector, Rs.130.131 million to communications and Rs 101.16 million in public health sectors, PA Mohmand said. He said a total of 24 educational institutions were damaged while 15 health facilities were also hit by the militants. He said a total of 870 house were demolished. This number includes houses of militants demolished by FC and also houses demolished by the militants in the pre-operation era, Amjad Ali said. He said that the government was giving special focus to communication, health and education sector to bring the tribesmen into national mainstream and bring them at par with other people of the country. Seven projects have been started for promotion of women education in the Agency, he said. "Tribal system is being restored to maintain law and order situation in the agency, he said and added that 65 percent tribal system have been restored and responsibility was given to Maliks to maintaining law and order and restore peoples confidence.
