China is blessed to have such a wide variety of cultures. This is a tremendous asset when it comes to domestic tourism. Some other countries are stupid enough to discriminate their minorities while in China minorities are granted special privileges. This policy may not be popular with the Han majority, but look at the bigger picture and have a bigger heart!

I have started dreaming from some last few years that there is a direct connection between Kunming & Chengdu to Arunanchal and onwards, Lhasa to Bengal via Sikkim, tibbet to Delhi, and last from Xinxiyang to Laddakh onwards to already in construction north west frieght corridor. I think maybe in our lifetime our both government will accept the current border as permanent. That can unlock the real potential. China is already far ahead in infrastructure development.

I once went to the northeastern India in group entering from Kolkata (West Bengal): Darjeeling, Gangtok (east Sikkim), Siliguri etc, riding many hours on land transport through often the winding roads within several days wandering the regions close to Himalayan range and Bhutan (eventually crossed to Bhutan by land) and finally flew to Nepal from Bhutan. Fascinating people, life, traditions, though those regions aren't the wealthy ones, yet people there have their own dynamics, they've vigorous, fascinating life, quite impressive and earned respects for visitors like myself; and there are many Buddhist observers. A thrilling trip of lifetime remembrance for me, my only experience with the subcontinent India and it's a positive one!

Back to the train transport, it will be very great if one day the bordering nations such as India, Nepal and so on may be cross-border linked to China through quality railways, perhaps a kind of HSR. From the Tibetan Plateau crossing Arunanchal, Ladakh, Sikkim as well as Nepal are pretty close. Once there is such political will from all parties, in particular Delhi, the railways will come into realization. One day the One Belt, One Road Initiative may help realize these ideas... an unprecedented development in human's civilization.

Forgive me but I hate less crowded places as seen in some infrastructure pics. Thing is I am accustomed to crowed whether in not so lineup crowed in Varanasi or in pretty much trained crowed in Mumbai. I actually fear less crowded places.

I have the contrary preference to favor the tranquil places with beautiful landscapes, unique culture and more traditional life and mild to cold climate

Btw Yunnan is the most culturally diversified province in China and be the home of about 37 minority ethnics, having very rich cultural life, varieties of bamboo and beautiful natural landscapes... and people there really love dancing in public parks, quite thrilling atmosphere witnessing the ordinary folks dancing in open air, been in Kunming - Dali - Lijiang - Shangri-la (Zhongdian / Deqen) this mid-year, a very impressive land! And from those pics posted here, Guizhou is also quite fascinating to visit too one day I should pay a visit there!

He was stating the fact. Take a look at the terrain. I would go as far as saying many nations would've dropped this project amid security / life threatening conditions for their workers. Chinese have excelled in infrastructure development. Credit should be given where its deserved.

I saw a couple of videos recently where these guys can stand up a mid-high rise in less than three months. The remainder of the world takes a few years. So for sure they've excelled at rapid infrastructure development.

Building infra in Southwest China is given priority financially.
Cities like my hometown are financing local infra on their own, but not in Southwest China.
At provincial capital cities in Southwest, subways are being built.
Expressways are being built to connect every county.
Long-term plan is to link every city by HSRs.

Within 2 years, the capital of China's poorest province, Guiyang City, becomes a national HSR hub with 200 services daily to every major city on the network.
Now, Chengdu-Guiyang and Chongqing-Guiyang HSRs are under construction
3-5 years later, every capital in Southwest will be closely connected.

This thread provides ample info and pictorial ones to share with my friends through social media... great HSR services, many breathtakingly beautiful natural landscapes of Yunnan and Guizhou, very rich and diversified culturally... should give them some new urge to visit these two regions

The HSR terminal Guiyang will be further strengthened when Chengdu-Guiyang HSR opens, which will be one section of the Chengdu-Guiyang-Guangzhou-HK corridor......

Do you think Kunming will become Tier 2 city? Now that it's well connected to mainland, Vietnam, Laos and Myanmar, its potential of being a regional economic hub is enormous.

I've been there for multiple times (Yunnan 4 times, Guizhou 2 times, Sichuan 5 times) before any HSR opened.
The scenery there is simply one of the best in China, on par with Tibet and Sichuan provinces.
Southwest China deserves my annual visit. I've been doing that since 2009.

I wouldn't think about we could travel to all provincial capitals in Southwest China
by bullet train one day back in 2009.
Now, the convenient transport makes no excuses for Chinese to skip this region.

Jiuzhaigou, now served by highway and airport, will be connected with expressway and Lanzhou-Chengdu HSR built on 3-4km high plateaus (2019).

Lanzhou-Chengdu, Chengdu-Xi'an, Chengdu-Kunming, Chengdu-Guiyang....numerous HSRs are being constructed in Sichuan Province

Where there is expressway/HSR,
there will be investment, tourists, job creation, industry movement....
