8 of the world's most spectacular infrastructure projects

They mentioned the under-ground tunnel railway network but this project holds no water infront of Erdogan's most ambitious project till now : Canal Istanbul 2023!

48 kilometer long man-built canal connecting the Black Sea with Marmara Sea ... This will boost trade between Middle-East, Turkey, Russia, and the Europe...

Best of luck to Turks for this...

the list consists of projects under construction or to be constructed.

It is often unfair to compare INFRASTRUCTURE projects in other developing countries to those in China. Even for under construction projects, in China you can find numerous expressways under construction (10,000 km completed last year), airports under construction, sea ports under construction, metro/subway under construction, high speed rails under construction etc. In fact, we don't even have to take the HSRs under construction as a whole network, because single HSR projects can have larger investment than most of the listed projects. For instance the Lanzhou-Urumqi HSR to be completed next year will become the world's longest HSR built at once, and its total investment alone is around $25 billion. And there are quite a few such HSRs under construction.

the list is purposely made with balance to make sure that we don't see the list dominated by Chinese projects.

Just off my mind, I already can think of two even bigger infrastructure project.

How about the Tibet railroad ?
How about the 3 Gorges dam ?

OP, I wish you had posted some pics. Can you? I'll give you a bottle of Fosters beer if you do! :D

there are many projects much bigger than Beijing new airport.....i double if it can be China top five ongoing or planning.

Kolkata Metro is the first metro in India.

And no way Delhi Metro will be the world's largest or second largest metro in the foreseeable future.

yes it would be one of largest in the world. Its present length is 190km,180 Km more would be build by 2016 and 100 more kms would come before 2021

the current largest subway system in the world, Seoul subways, has 500km+ in 2013, and Beijing comes very close and will soon become the largest in a few years again(it was the largest last year). Delhi subways may have a chance to become one of the top 10 systems, with 400km+ by 2021. But by 2020 Beijing will have 1000km+ and cities such as Seoul and Shanghai will have 800km--1000km of lines, so their lead is only going to be bigger. That is why I said no way Delhi is going to be the world's largest or second largest (or even third largest) subway system in the near future, unless we see Delhi implement a very unlikely 1000km+ plan after 2020.

mm by 2021,it is probabily 190+180+100 km,ie 470 kms..also,I dont see a 1000km subway here
Beijing Subway - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Also,Delhis Mass Rapid Transit is not going to Delhi metro alone-Other cities in Delhi NCR like Noida are planning their own metros-Gurgaon already have one,and a 150-200kmph Regional Rapid Transit system is also on the Cards

Also I feel Hyderabad deserves that position => a private financed $ 2.1 billion subway

if you look at the table in section 6 "future lines", there are a total of 464 km of lines to open before 2020, adding to its current length 456km, that is already 920km of lines by 2020. There are several lines missing in wiki as usual. I just googled “beijing subway 2020”, and there are multiple news pieces like this that revealed the city's official plan of building 1000km+ of lines before 2020.

when we talk about an urban rapid transit system, we don't normally include the nearby cities, otherwise connected cities such as Seoul and Incheon will become one huge network. And we certainly don't include commuter rails, otherwise you have to focus on cities like Tokyo. There are very specific rules for urban planners to follow.

Like I said, it is good balance to include Hyderabad metro, but that is all when it comes to lists like this.

Noida and Gurgaon is a part of Delhi NCR,and it is not a nearby city ,and RRTS is not a commuter rail but a Regional Rapid Transit system which itself is a Rapid Transit sytem

beijing-subway-map_master.jpg

According to the Beijing Metro Company, from 2013 to 2015 Beijing will continue to place at least one new subway line every year. It is estimated that by the year 2015, Beijing will have 19 fully operating subway lines, with a combined length of 561km. The total subway length is even expected to increase to 1,000 km by 2020, as stated by the Beijing Metro Company.

thanks for that clarification of the Indian geology term, but that refers to a greater metropolitan area such as the Seoul capital area or great Tokyo area, which exactly means they are nearby cities in the same area. When professionals consider subway systems, they talk about multiple systems in the Seoul capital area or independent systems in the greater Tokyo area. Anyway I don't think that is relevant, based on current information I don't see them belong to the Delhi metro system plan, and apparently the official plan does not include them as well.
