What did China get for this consumer capitalism at the behest of US. It was US, who in 1982 persuaded China in manufacturing cheap consumer goods for US and rest of white man's world. China in its enthusiasm to progress fell for it.

To manufacture all these consumer worth more than a trillion dollars, China is emptying it's coal mines, it's steel mines and all other natural resources.

Yes, it got cash in return. Half of this US and the Europe keeps, other half builds its infrastructure. Factories are build by $100 billion a year FDI which US and Europe sends it.

Net effect:

  • China has cash to build a military machine to intimidate the neighbours.
  • High prestige.
  • There is a huge downside which exceeds the benefits
  1. Countryside is polluted by burning huge amount of coal in inefficient coal burning power plants with no end in sight.
  2. Rivers and lakes are so badly polluted that these are dying as more and more acid falls on forest wealth. It is well known that a river in the north which flowed to the sea until about 1995 does not reach the sea any more.
  3. Drinking water supply is polluted so deadly that nothing can be done to restore it except anti pollution measures for next 50 years.
  4. That smog blanket which previously was ignored by the western observers has begun to make news. Smog jokes of Shanghai are well known.
  5. 8 million acres are polluted over last twenty years. Another 20 million acres will br go off the cultivation in next twenty years. Then food supply will be compromised.

Welcome to new China. I sincerely hope they continue on this path. It is already an old men's country. Old men get sick sooner under the above circumstances. Now China would be called not only country of old men but sick, old and hungry people.

@Farooq - Hindutva has nothing to do with the original post. THe news is reported by Reuters and China's Vice Minister of Land and Resources Wang Shiyuan confirms the figures. It wasn't an Indian who reported it.

On the other hand, India has every reason to learn from blindly going into aggressive industrial production with no pollution norms to adhere to. Yes, anti-pollution laws exist in India but if we want to go China's way in I.P at the cost of agricultural land, the spectre for air pollution and water pollution in India will be 10-20 fold more than what it is today.

One thing to note about landing into China or India - as the plane descends into any Indian/Chinese city, one can see the thick layer of pollution in deep contrast to the clear skies . Both nations need to address industrial pollution proactively. The scope for co-operation exists between the two nations for anti-pollution technology development / transfer.

This is certainly not a dick measuring contest like you (Farooq and many other Chinese posters ) think it to be. Lessons have to be learnt for the benefit of all. And to elaborate the 'benefit of all' - one should come to Hong Kong and see how air pollution from across the border affects HK . Pollutions doesnt start and end with borders ! In fact, it has none !

BTW - Farooq, you have been reported for bringing in religion un-necessarily. Next time, read the rules of PDF

India needs 10 million soldiers more to stand china's invasion. Food and land shortage means China will invade India. China is aggressive.

I always say beggars, homeless, poor people in india must be sent to miltary because there they will get good food for one month and turned into soldiers within 2 months. Mawalis sports fans must also be sent to the miltary
It must sucks to be you, living in all that fear. China is aggressive? Our territory hasn't change an inch since 1949, and the last war we fought was 35 years ago. I would love to see India raise a 10 million men army though.
