Philippine Air Force Signs Contract for Eight AW109 Power Helicopters

Illegal Request

AgustaWestland, a Finmeccanica company, is pleased to announce that the Philippine Air Force has signed a contract for eight AW109 Power light twin helicopters. These aircraft will be used to perform a range of duties including homeland security, armed reconnaissance and close support. Deliveries will start in 2014. The contract also includes initial logistics support and training for aircrew and maintenance personnel. This contract further expands the presence of AgustaWestland in the Philippine helicopter market and adds one more military customer for the AW109 Power model in this country, following an order for three aircraft by the Philippine Navy earlier this year to enhance the service’s maritime operational capability.

The Philippine Air Force’s AW109 Power configuration will feature a dedicated mission package and equipment including a combination of weapon systems.Daniele Romiti, Chief Executive Officer, AgustaWestland said “It gives us great pleasure to sign this contract with the Philippine Air Force, further reinforcing the already strong partnership with the Department of National Defence. This latest achievement provides clear evidence of the customer’s confidence in the product while we’ve demonstrated that we are a reliable partner, able to offer a cost-effective solution. We are committed to deliver the improved mission capabilities and high quality services the customer deserves.”

The AW109 Power is a versatile aircraft that offers the highest level of benefits for government and military markets, combining optimum performance with cost-effectiveness. The Power’s flexibility allows it to perform a wide variety of missions for military forces. The Power is valued by operators and pilots alike for its outstanding performance, reliability and ease of maintenance combined with mission flexibility, high speed and productivity. It is single pilot IFR certified and can perform Category “A” take-offs from elevated helipads without any payload reduction, while complying with the European regulations relating to Class 1 performance helicopters. The AW109 Power can be equipped with either Pratt & Whitney or Turbomeca engines controlled by a Full Authority Digital Engine Control (FADEC) system. Pilot workload is reduced by way of a digital glass cockpit with six liquid crystal instrument displays.

Agusta Westland has delivered to the Philippines Sunday three of five AW109 maritime choppers intended for the Philippine Navy.

Navy spokesperson Lt. Cmdr. Gregory Fabic said the three multi-role choppers were assembled at Agusta Westland Hangar in Manila airport and flew to Sangley Airbase in Cavite on test flights yesterday. They will be commissioned before the end of the year after extensive testing.

Fabic said the AW109 has a "forward looking infrared (FLIR)" for enhanced search and rescue (SAR) capability and fitted with a night vision gear making it very ideal to conduct missions during the night-time. It can also be fitted in the future with dipping sonar and magnetic anomaly detection device

The anti-submarine helicopters will be deployed to the navy's flagship warships — BRP Gregorio del Pilar and Ramon Alcaraz.

The remaining two combat choppers are scheduled to arrive in the first quarter of 2014.

Meanwhile, a separate procurement for two (2) heavier variant Anti- Submarine Warfare (ASW) helicopter is being prepared by the Philippine Navy due to the weight of its propose sonar equipment.

07 January 2015

Key Points
  • The Philippines receives four AgustaWestland AW109 Power helicopters for its navy and air force
  • The aircraft are currently undergoing assembly before commencing flight tests
The Philippines Department of National Defense (DND) has taken delivery of four AgustaWestland AW109 Power helicopters for the country's navy and air force, the state-run Philippines News Agency reported on 7 January. The news agency also cited the country's undersecretary for defence materiel, Fernando Manalo, as saying that the aircraft are currently undergoing assembly before being put out for flight tests. Upon completion of these tests, two of the helicopters will be delivered to the Philippine Navy (PN), with the other two destined for the Philippine Air Force (PAF).

The aircraft are part of two contracts signed to equip the PN and PAF with five and eight AW109s respectively. The PN initially ordered a batch of three AW109s in March 2013, but eventually proceeded with the option to acquire two more. The PN's initial batch of three was delivered in December 2013.A PN public affairs officer told IHS Jane's that the two newly arrived helicopters are scheduled in principle for induction into the service on 16 January, but indicated that this schedule may change pending results of the flight and acceptance tests. IHS Jane's understands that the aircraft will replace the PN's fleet of ageing MBB 105C helicopters, conducting various tasks such as maritime surveillance and search-and-rescue.
