If we exclusively did it ourselves we would be left behind.
India is in a precarious position where we have to balance military imports and exports in such a fashion that the nascent military industrial complex in India is not spurned while we still get to buy enough to keep our enemies at bay.
Do you even realize that it takes MORE time to R&D than it takes to procure from other countries?

Don't go by the click baity articles by presstitutes, our defence forces know just fine how much is required to protect ourselves, we also know that we can't keep up with China now.
However India being a BRIC nation will have a superb GDP in the coming decades helping us achieve some sort of parity.
Until then however, we need "the big buys", which have been calculated and planned years ago and not a spontaneous decision like you lot think it is, if anything India is not spending enough on military.
