MANILA —

Dozens of heavily armed Philippine peacekeepers defied Syrian rebels on Friday in a Golan Heights standoff, hours after the fighters took hostage 43 Fijian soldiers there, the Filipinos’ commander said.

Seventy-five Filipino troops were defending two fortified posts in the U.N.-patrolled zone after armed groups surrounded them on Thursday and demanded they give up their weapons, Colonel Roberto Ancan told reporters in Manila.

Ancan, the commander of the Philippines’ peacekeeping operations division, said no shots had been fired during the stand-off, but that his troops were prepared to engage in combat.

“We can use deadly force in defense of the U.N. facilities,” Ancan said.

“I (would) just like to emphasise our troops are well-armed, they are well-trained… they are well-disciplined warrior peacekeepers.”

The military said the soldiers were occupying U.N. Disengagement Observer Force (UNDOF) posts about four kilometers apart in the buffer zone between Syria and Israel that was created after a 1974 ceasefire.

The U.N. earlier said 81 Filipino peacekeepers were surrounded, but Ancan said there were only 40 Filipinos in one post and 35 in the other.

On Wednesday, Syrian rebels, including militants from the al-Qaida affiliate Al-Nusra Front, stormed one section of the buffer zone and exchanged fire with Israeli troops.

A day later, the fighters captured 43 Fijians, forcing them to surrender their weapons, then taking them hostage.

Ancan said the rebels used an English-speaking Fijian hostage to relay their demand to the Filipino peacekeepers, who refused and stood their ground.

Philippine President Benigno Aquino described the situation in the Golan Heights as “tense”.

But, in brief comments to reporters, Aquino sought to calm fears about the fate of the troops.

“So far, we should not worry. The news is that the situation looks stable,” Aquino said.

Israel seized 1,200 square kilometers of the Golan Heights during the 1967 Six-Day War, then annexed it in a move never recognized by the international community.

The U.N. peacekeeping force has been stationed there since 1974 to monitor a ceasefire between Israel and Syria.

There are currently 1,200 UNDOF peacekeepers: from the Philippines, Fiji, India, Ireland, Nepal and the Netherlands.

UNPKF should never be targeted. They're not hostile to anyone, but rather, they are there to keep the peace.

Wow, the USA won't be happy to learn that Pinoys attacked their beloved Syrian allies like Al-Nusra. PH shouldn't be surprised if they find that US soldiers visiting local brothels are tipping far less this time.

Well your supprting them good we got ISIS supporter here oh good old intikto Raphael so full of bull

The monster supported so vehemently by the West and their regional allies seem to coming back to bite the feeding hand.

FSA is no longer, and whatever opposition remained in Syria, it is radical jihadists and countless of them.

What is significant is that the West still declines to help Syria to clean the country from these imported terrorists. Where is the moral responsibility. The West and their regional anti-Syria backers should admit their responsibility in creating the monster called ISIS, Al Nusra, etc., and assist the Syrian government to eradicate the terrorists.

Wish the captured and surrounded soldiers will return home to their loved ones unhurt.

How the hell we become the aggressors? It was those Syrian rebels who stormed the location and surrounded those PH peacekeepers after the Fijian peacekeepers surrendered. The PH peacekeepers simply stood their ground WITHOUT firing any shot.

If this is how the Chinese will see us then it is better for the PH to **** off itself from the UNPK and replace our contingent with "non-trigger happy" peacekeepers.

I heard that Philippines is about to get all its 331 blue berets away from the area. If they really intend to carry on with that decision I hope that some other country will fill the gap. This is exactly the reason UN forces should be there. Unless we want these 43 blue berets from the Fiji islands to have been IDF soldiers instead and Israel running head first into Syria...

I'm not blaming you here. But you should know that it's totally irrelevant to the US whether you fired the first shot or were even at fault. The only question they will ask is, "are these guys one of 'my guys'?" And Al-Nusra is indeed one of their guys.

Our soldiers did what they're supposed to do, the rebels favors ours presence there maybe they heard that were pulling out so they made the first move in taking those weapons inside the facilities. Perhaps once were gone China can take our place:cheesy: I wonder what would ur soldiers doo_O

We should have done it years ago and leave that place to other peacekeepers. Golan Heights is no longer our problem. Maybe China should step, seeing that the members here imply in some way that they have what it takes to maintain the peace in that area without starting a gunfight.

It was a great call not to surrender. Better fight to the death than be taken hostage and beheaded. These Muslim terrorists are expecting an easy massacre of voluntary victims.

Well that's the point of the UN, nobody has interest in the area. If China would send a number of peacekeepers it would indeed solve the problem.

We never say anything about how China does their job in Xinjiang yet someone here or several people here try to meddle in our local Muslim insurgency issue...

If China does that, then we would no longer deal with some peacekeeping operations in places that has nothing to do with us in any way and putting our own men in harm's way.
