Naxalite or Naksalvadis (name from the village of Naxalbari in the Indian state of West Bengal where the movement originated), are a group of far-left radical communists, supportive of Maoist political sentiment and ideology. Their origin can be traced to the split in 1967 of the Communist Party of India (Marxist), leading to formation of Communist Party of India (Marxist–Leninist). Initially the movement had its centre in West Bengal. In recent years, it has spread into less developed areas of rural central and eastern India, such as Chhattisgarh and Andhra Pradesh through the activities of underground groups like the Communist Party of India (Maoist). They lead the Naxalite-Maoist insurgency. As of 2009, Naxalites are active across approximately 220 districts in twenty states of India accounting for about 40 percent of India's geographical area, They are especially concentrated in an area known as the "Red corridor", where they control 92,000 square kilometers. According to India's intelligence agency, the Research and Analysis Wing, 20,000 armed cadre Naxalites were operating apart from 50,000 regular cadres working in their various mass organizations and millions of sympathisers, and their growing influence prompted Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to declare them as the most serious internal threat to India's national security. The Naxalites are opposed by virtually all mainstream Indian political groups. In February 2009, Central government announced its plans for simultaneous, co-ordinated counter-operations in all Left-wing extremism-hit states—Chhattisgarh, Orissa, Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra, Jharkhand, Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, and West Bengal, to plug all possible escape routes of Naxalites.

Violence has peaked in India from Maoist or Naxalite separatist violence being more dangerous to India's national security, as declared by Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.
The Indian Ministry of Home Affairs estimates the following yearly death tolls from the violence:
1996: 156 deaths
1997: 428 deaths
1998: 270 deaths
1999: 363 deaths
2000: 50 deaths
2001: 100+ deaths
2002: 140 deaths
2003: 451 deaths
2004: 500+ deaths
2005: 700+ deaths
2006: 750 deaths
2007: 650 deaths
2008: 794 deaths
2009: 1,134 deaths
According to the BBC, more than 6,000 people have died during the rebels' 20-year fight.
Hope that clears it up for you........................

just a question.
who in ur gov is taking wat stand? and on wat basis? just want to know the parties and their point of views regarding this issue

Till date, in excess of 250 police men killed with no visible gain against the Maoist.

Today, his brilliant statement was..." "The loss of life is huge, I am shocked. Something went drastically wrong,"

Home minister Chidambaram is a terrible failure. When the Maoist responded to Home Ministers call for talks, he somersaulted. He displayed gimmickry on national level by some vague issues like “call me on this number” etc. He could have used other measures like appointing competent officials to take it forward.

Today people died and he is shocked .... still waiting to hear achievements from action taken so far and retaliatory action on massive scale

The core problem is the cheap politics.

There is no cooperation or lack of it from state governments.

Before getting emotional and blaming chidambaram for it, one must realize that law and order is state subject and as per constitution of India, govt. of India can not do much, other than providing extra troops, materials etc.

It is local/state police and intelligence network have to work jointly as well oiled machinery.

And as Maoist flee to another state if one state govt. take strict action.

We need the joint operation by all the state government, police, intelligence and as well as central govt.

My condolence goes to the families of those part of the CRPF team.

My well wishes to the GoP and its people to combat the growing Maoist threat.

Moists are in several states and are not confined to one particular place. This require a national government level effort, because it involves several states.

Chidambaram must take the blame for the attack as he is at the forefront in dealing with Moaists, not the state government.

100% correct!

Really sad day for India!!! Let those cowards touch a hair of Rahul baba, the whole Indian govt will pi$$ in their pants. But here these were bloody general police and public, where is the time for Chidu to act!!! He simply felt 'sorry'! Thats it. Same goes for Mamta and other political parties.

For some mystical reason the Congress govt is not ready to go for all out strike against Maoists!!! May be because they are not Congress strong holds! Congress is taking political benefits from the red menace! why they will bother about India.

None taking any serious actions. All those operations are not to uproot Maoists but to show Indian public that we are there. Some of the political parties openly supporting them as well as some so called 'intellectuals'.
