ISLAMABAD: Frontier Corps Commander in Dera Bugti Col Shaz ul Haq Janjua has said about 700 Baloch militants have laid down the arms before the army at Dera Bugti so far in response to government offer for general amnesty and rehabilitation.

Talking to BBC Urdu program, he said about 40 militants have laid down their arms uptill now during this year in Dera Bugti and they all are residents of Dera Bugti and Sui.

He pointed out that all the militants who have surrendered are from Baloch Republican Army, a Baloch separatist outfit. They have admitted of launching several attacks on security forces and state installations. However they have been pardoned under government policy for rehabilitation of militants to reintegrate them into normal life. Financial assistance is also being extended to them in connection with their rehabilitation.

Responding to a question if any assurance has been given to them for their protection against any prospective threat following their surrender to army , he said no implications would ensue.

“ You are also watching the events on TV now and they don’t constitute even one percent of the entire Balochistan. When I watch TV it seems to me as if I am sitting in Switzerland”, he held.

FC Commander said these militants have surrendered before the army on their own. “We assist government of Balochistan in the rehabilitation of these militants. We help to get admit their children in schools. A sum of Rs 10000 is disbursed among them by district administration every month”, he added.

He observed “ they are poor people and some one sponsors them and instigates them to go for insurgency. But this tendency is now going to end and only 100 people are left behind here.

It may be recalled that government of Balochistan is passing through phase of chaos and disorder since long. Government of Balochistan had recently announced general amnesty and offered to provide financial assistance in connection with rehabilitation of Baloch militants under Aghaz-e- Huqooq Balochistan. But the separatists’ outfits of Balochistan have been rejecting such claims by the government of Balochistan.

As per human rights organizations on the other side, attacks on security forces and state installations, mysterious disappearances of people and recovery of mutilated bodies are still continuing.

In accordance with annual report from commission for human rights, government officials had confirmed recovery of 125 defaced bodies till October, 2012 but the unofficial sources say the number of such bodies is far larger. (Online)

Looks like Army's long term strategy of rehabilitation in Balochistan's insurgency hit areas is bearing fruit.

Encouraging news in the midst of all the problems we are having with terrorists/extremists and the war we are fighting on our Western fronts ! One wonders how the situation is somehow improving as the withdrawal draws nearer . Are the militant leaders running out of funds from foreign countries ?

Great job , FC :pakistan:

Great news, bring these Baloch brothers back into the mainstream, since they have realised their wrong ways, they deserve as much opportunity as any other citizen. On another note, PAF is also playing it's part to make the Baloch youth aware of their prospects.

It's 2006 all over again folks, where PTV used to run daily stories of how much rebels were surrendering if anyone remember. But next chance they get, they will pick up arms once again!
