7 ‘Jamaat’ teachers held

Police arrested seven teachers including the principal of a school and recovered a huge number of leaflets, books and ‘anti-government’ publications from the school compound in the city's Kotwali area Saturday.

The arrestees are workers of Jamaat-e-Islami and were involved in anti-government activities, Razib-al-Masud, assistant commissioner (AC) of Kotwali Zone, claimed when asked about the reason of their arrest.

Mohammad Alamgir Hossain, 52, is the principal of Dhaka Model Pre-cadet and High School on Awlad Hossain Lane.

Others are: Nure Alam Siddique, 63, Mohammad Ismail Khan, 29, Mohammad Sirazul Islam, 22, Tazul Islam, 36, Mohammad Obaidullah, 23, and Mohammad Rustum Ali, 25. Police identified them as teaching staff of the school.

Police officer Razib said that the principal is the treasurer of Jamaat’s Kotwali Thana unit. He started the school along with Nure Alam in 1990 to run party activities under the guise of teaching children.

"They recruited party activists as teachers and used the school as their den," the assistant commissioner said.

Police also recovered posters, which demand release of the ‘war criminals’, anti-government booklets and CDs from the school office, he added.

It appears that Government is not brooking any nonsense from these fundamentalist rabble.

The Augean stable requires its overdue cleaning!

These guys should be punished and should be made an example of. Their responsibility is to teach the kids, to educate them, etc. instead they are teaching them to riot.

It appear that govt is not ready to any anti govt activities.this arrest prove again al is not democratic. In a democratic country any political party has right to organize meeting in any convinient place unless the main purpose of that place is not hampered

He must either be Awami supporter or sympathizer otherwise he could not come up with such comment. Almost all agree that Awami league is aiming to establish one party rule. All democratic forces must joint hand against this bloody thugs and criminals.

After school or before school, one cannot indulge in seditious activities within the school premises.

The problem in this subcontinent is that we don't give education and educational institutions their due as it used to be done before.

I am just amazed by the hypocrisy. If AL people had been arrested by the BNP-Jamat government I bet Tiki Tam Tam would be complaining about BD becoming a Taliban fascist state. However, since its Jamat supporters who are arrested he is justifying the hell out of it.

Listen, do you even know the difference between "sedition" and "difference of opinion"? Disagreeing with the government is not sedition.

Secondly, if it is their own school they can do what they damn well please inside it (legal things that is). It is a private school and not a government school. You are just making up lies out of thin air.

SO let me summarize:
1) It was perfectly legal to oppose the government.
2) It was perfectly legal to use your own property to oppose the government.

Don't listen to those who make unfounded statements people.

I hope you have been able to follow my English.

I am not justifying it at all.

Does it appear justifying?

It appears that Government is not brooking any nonsense from these fundamentalist rabble.

The Augean stable requires its overdue cleaning!

I understand it is a problem for those who have ants in their pants and are not ready to read the issue but jump to conclusion already drawn in their fevered mind!

I am sure that you would not have understood what is Augean stables.

It is from Greek mythology. It is the extremely dirty stables that were finally cleaned by Hercules who diverted two rivers through them.

But ofcourse, now you will say you knew all about it.

If so, why the J'Accuse?

As far as the difference between 'sedition' and 'difference of opinion' why did you not ask Bangla Bhai or Khaleda who hung him? I am sure you would be of the opinion that Bangla Bhai was a great patriot and that awful woman Khaled wreaked vengeance and cussedness.

Even if one owns a school, there is the question of ethics and morality.

But going by your diatribe, I presume you don't believe in such esoteric things.

You are really Lonely if you think that the educationalists are not the one who shape the children and the future of the nation!

As far as AL,BNP and the Jammait, who finds your favour, they are all of the same feather bent on ensuring Bangladesh remains in the doldrums!

I think the one party rule is now inevitable. Honestly speaking, awami league seems pretty strong and determined to continue with its agenda regardless of the opposition. I'm not too sure how credible this claims are but according to some sources, journalists who are speaking against the govt are being abducted or jailed for seditious charges. There is a direct pressure from the govt to censor stories which might "hurt" national interest and journalists are constantly threatened for reporting "abduction" or "missing person" stories.
BNP and Jamaat seems pretty spineless and weak, and I doubt the hartals or any mass demonstrations will cause any change. Anyways, seems like awami league is here to stay for a pretty long time.

The AL regime is nothing new in BD politics. Mujib became a dictator with a steamroller. The Rokhi bahini were blood thirsty animals in the same league as BSF. We all know who trained Rokhi bahini. We survived those nightmarish days. In those days people would be picked up never to be seen again. We just saw a repeat of Mujib dictatorship as the BNP leaders were beat up like the way Rokhi bahini used to beat up and maim AL opposition.

Old habits die hard.

Matter of fact, many opposition leaders and activists has been picked up even in this regime and never seen again. Back then we had some disgruntled army men to take care of the fascist regime, but this time I see no hope.

I think BDR would be a fitting comparison, cause BSF is just doing its job, whereas BDR is known for running redundancy drives for army officers.

If Rakhi Bahini was like BDR, we wouldn't be complaining now, would we? Rakhi Bahani was fierce, focused and efficient at getting things done. Offcourse, all for the wrong reasons, which is why they are a sad chapter in Bangladesh's history.
