But many decides to give the money to the clergymen which lead us to the situation we are in today. I am also fully aware that many don't give it at all (given that %20 is already a big amount). But the point is that even if it was a small group of people, the revenues will still be immense with no transparency on how much money gets in, and how much money gets out.

Money is always a factor no one deny it , but compare to other side ,shah regime had upper hand in this like selling oil , all rights in gold and silver mines .... beside a well established regime with powerful internal and external allies so comparing khums income for one side to other side income is like pocket change
the main factor was Islamic ideology and ayatollah khomeini had upper hand in this .
