A total of about 63,000 fake students entered Britain in 2011, and 59 percent of the total number of Indian pupils were bogus, a report by a British campaign group said Wednesday.

The study by Migration Watch UK, based on the findings of a Home Office pilot scheme, said the highest percentage of bogus students came from Myanmar at 62 percent.

It was followed by India, Bangladesh and Nigeria with 59 percent, a press statement said.
Under the pilot scheme, applicants for student visas were interviewed to determine whether they were genuine. This involved two tests - whether they were genuine as students and whether they intended to return home after their studies.

Of the total 63,000 students who could be potentially refused visa on credibility grounds, 61 percent were applying for privately funded colleges, 17 percent for a publicly funded college and 14 percent for a university.

The Home Office now plans to interview 10,000 students a year.
Andrew Green, chairman of Migration Watch, said: "We now have clear evidence of abuse on a major scale. Bogus students come here to work illegally and thus take jobs from British workers."

"If it is clear from the circumstances that a student is unlikely to go home, the visa should not be granted in the first place. After all, many of the advantages claimed for foreign students depend on their going home after their studies," he said.

Referring to a letter to the Sunday Times daily, signed by 37 business leaders, calling for students to be taken out of net migration, Green said that it was impossible because, unlike the US and Australia, Britain has no exit checks.

"So nobody knows how many who came as students have actually left Britain."

. . .
This is partly due to the fact that UK universities wants students at any cost. Some of the Indian students who are doing their graduations in the well known UK universites won't even qualify in local Indian universites like Delhi let alone qualify in any competitive exams. Self funded students try to overtsay in the UK and when returned they get a good job just because they have paid for a degree in the UK but frankly quality is rather poor. Some of them end up menial work in supermarkets and resturants during holidays just to pay for the huge loan they have taken.

.
One more thing the number of students interviewed across the different nations seems varying.

Post Interviewees assessed on credibility % of grants which would potentially be refused on credibility grounds
Pakistan 669 48%
India 363 59%
Nigeria 134 59%
Kenya 96 16%
China 90 32%
Philippines 89 53%
Bangladesh 68 59%
Sri Lanka 58 41%
Egypt 55 5%
Colombia 35 3%
Burma 21 62%

Wonder if the numbers were selected based on number of them applying?

lol``almost all the Indian hard labour workers in Hackney Road, and Commercial Road/Street are all with 'student' visa, yet they all working full-time, not to mention those in KFC and M.C, and my shop in Covent Garden has at least 5 Indian 'students' come in looking for full-time jobs

so i'd say that number is way over that``

.

40% Pakistani Students to Britain Fake

LONDON - Britain has decided to make it tough for Pakistani students to step on the English soil, following a pilot scheme finding as many as four in ten applicants may be bogus.

British Home Office figures have revealed that thousands of student visa applicants cannot speak English, despite claiming they want to study here, the Daily Mail reported.

Home Secretary Theresa May has now decreed that anyone wanting to come to study in Britain from Pakistan must be interviewed by border agency officials before a visa is granted. An estimated 10,000 Pakistani students apply to come to the country every year. Presently, if paper applications raise suspicions, applicants may be interviewed in their home country. Of these, around 20 percent are rejected. But a recent pilot scheme in which every applicant was required to have a face-to-face interview found that up to 43 percent should be rejected.

Last month, a report by the National Audit Office found that a flawed immigration crackdown may have allowed up to 50,000 bogus students into Britain.
