Rash driving leaves truck into a ditch in Chittagong
CHITTAGONG, July 11: At least 53 school students were killed and more than 50 injured when a packed truck fell into a ditch on the Abu Torab-Borotakia highway in the Mirersarai Sadar area of Chittagong on Monday afternoon.
The driver of the truck, carrying more than 80 students and some passengers, lost control when he tried to overtake another vehicle.
A rescue team, comprising fire brigade, local administration and the police, found 41 bodies and rescued 15 injured students, nine of them critical, sources said. Local people rushed to the spot and tried to rescue the victims. They informed the fire brigade and police.
After the final match of the first round of the Bangabandhu Smriti Gold Cup at the Mirersarai Sadar stadium between Aunkuren Nesa Primary School and Abu Torab High School, students of the two schools were returning home in a truck (No. Chatta MetroDa110337).
Some of the students managed to save themselves by jumping from the truck, but most of them fell into the ditch filled with water. The Mirersarai upazila chairman, Gias Uddin, said 53 students were killed.
The victims have been identified as Imran Hossain Emon, student of class IX, Mohammed Gofran Uddin (class IX), Sujan (class IX), Kamrul Hossain (class VII), Mohammed Sakib (class VIII), Liton (class VIII), Al Mobarak (class VIII), Amin Sharif (class VIII), Mohammed Tofajjal (class VI), Mohammed Rajib (class VI), Mohammed Shamsuddin, Ananda, Shubal (all class VIII), Samir (class VII), Saju (class VII), Rajib (class VIII), Mohammed Reaj (class IX), Mohammed Asif (class VIII), Rony (class X), Noyon (class X), Mohammed Arif (class IX), Fony (class VIII), Titu Das (class VIII), Shubha (class VIII), Sajjad Hossain (class VIII), Jewel (class VIII), Shubha Rahman (class VII), Mohammed Tarek (class IX), Dhrub Nath (class VIII), Ahad Rafi (class III), Reaj Hossain (class V), Mohammed Mohi Uddin (class IV), Shahadat Hossain (class V), Jahid Hossain (class V) and Rajib (class V).
Students of Abu Torab High School who died are Shaju Ahamed (HSC), Iftekhar Hossain (HSC) and Mamun (HSC), and a passenger, Anwar Hossain, 50.
Talking to The Independent, a survivor said the driver of the truck was trying to overtake every vehicle on the road. The accident took place when he tried to overtake another truck, he added.
Pappu, another student, said: Mofij Uddin, the driver, jumped out of the truck after losing control of the vehicle. As a result, the truck felt into the ditch.
Ahamed Kabir, a local resident, said: We rushed to the spot after the accident and tried to rescue the students. We informed the fire brigade and police as soon as we could.
Foyez Ahamed, Deputy Commissioner (DC) of Chittagong, said: It was a most unfortunate accident. Twenty-seven bodies have been sent to the Medical College Hospital for autopsy. Some of the bodies were taken away by family members from the spot.
Manjurul Islam, Additional Superintendent of Police (North) in Chittagong, said the police rushed to the spot on getting the news. After lifting the truck from the ditch, the police filed a case with Mirsarai police station. The driver of the truck and his helper fled the scene.
After the accident, the Dhaka-Chittagong highway was blocked and traffic movement on the road was suspended from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. today. Prime minister Sheikh Hasina and President Zillur Rahman expressed their deep condolences over the tragedy. Of the 29 bodies found, 11 have been kept at the Mirsarai Upazila Health Complex, 13 at Matrika Hospital, a nearby private clinic, and five at the Chittagong Medical College Hospital. Health minister AFM Ruhal Haque has directed the medical officers of Mirsarai Upazila Health Complex to ensure proper treatment of the injured. According to a health ministry statement, a group of doctors from Chittagong and Feni have joined the rescue team.
