New Delhi: In the last 80 days since the September 29 surgical strikes, about 51 soldiers of the Indian Army and the border security forces, including one from SSB, have lost their lives in militant attacks and cross-border firing by the Pakistani Army in Jammu and Kashmir.

The figures, arrived at by studying a compilation made by South Asian Terrorism Portal, a leading website dedicated to counter terrorism analysis, implied that every week more than four Indian soldiers are being killed in the area.

While the most recent militant attack took place on Saturday when three Army jawans were killed in an ambush on an Army convoy in Pampore, the last major attack took place on November 29 in Nagrota where seven soldiers, including two Army Majors, were killed.

In a tactical shift towards militants operating from across the LoC and to strike a “hard state” image, commandos from India’s elite special forces had carried out several coordinated and incisive strikes on militant launch pads across the LoC, inflicting huge damage in the intervening night of September 28-29.

This was also in response to a brazen attack on September 18 by Pakistani Army-backed militants on an Army base in J&K’s Uri that killed 19 soldiers.

In 2016, up to December 18, the number of personnel killed stood at more than 80 with more than 210 injured. This is by far the highest casualty number among security forces in the last three years. Last year, the number of personnel killed in J&K stood at 39. In 2014 it was 47 while it was 53 in 2013.

Till date, 6,275 personnel have been killed in terrorist violence in J&K in the last 28 years with the peak recorded in 2000 when 638 were killed. During this 28-year period, 23,131 militants have been killed.

The Army requires the range of detection of a human target at minimum 1000 meters. The 1,000-meters rang is crucial in the mountainous Himalayan region where life of soldiers posted within visual range remains at stake especially on the border with Pakistan. "The normal range of detection is approximately 300 to 500 meters at night with a high quality NVD and that too on a clear night. However in certain terrain with limited vegetation higher ranges can be obtained," says Brigadier Rahul K Bhonsle (retired), a Delhi based defense expert. However, the recently floated RFIs are considered highly ambitious. "The type of technology is not available in India. The Ordnance Factory Board is claiming to be manufacturing Image Intensification night sights for LMGs whereas the Army is seeking a thermal image based technology. Possibly the RFI is over optimistic and at the RFP stage some changes with downward range could be made," Bhonsle added. The Indian Army has sought long range NVDs because it has recently lost a large number of soldiers in close fire on the border with Pakistan. Since the September 29 'surgical strikes', India had lost 51 soldiers in militant attacks and cross-border firing. In all, India has lost over 80 soldiers this year which is by far the highest casualty since 2013.

Also it is your old post flawed, as SATP clearly defines terrorists incidents as any violent incidents involving terrorists.

On October 16 Sepoy Sudees Kumar was killed in Pakistani troops firing along LoC in Rajouri.

On October 22, a BSF jawan Gurnam Singh, who was critically injured in Pakistani troops firing on October 20, succumbed.

The next day another BSF jawan Sushil kumar was killed in Pakistani troops firing along the IB in RS Pura sector.

Four days later (October 27), BSF Head Constable Jitendra Kumar was killed in Pak firing along the IB in Jammu district.

Oct 27, army man Sandeep Singh Rawat was killed during a gunfight with infiltrating militants in Tangdhar sector of Kupwara district.

The next day, militants assisted by Pakistani troops cover fire conducted a cross-LoC attack in Machil sector of Kupwara district. The militants killed an army man Mandeep Singh, 26, and beheaded his body before fleeing back. One militant was also killed in retaliatory firing.

A BSF jawan Nitin Subhash was killed in Pakistani troops firing in Machil sector of Kupwara on the same day.

After a brief lull in firing for over a week, two soldiers were killed in Pakistani troops firing along LoC in Poonch district on November 6.

Two days later, two more army men Naik H K Yadava and Naik Prem Singh were killed in cross-border shelling along LoC in Rajouri district.

On November 9, a soldier was killed in sniper fire of Pakistani troops in Machil sector of Kupwara district.

Three days later, an army man Gunner Harsit Bhadouria was killed in Pakistani troops firing along LoC in Keran sector of Kupwara district.

The SATP figures of 51 is not just LoC and Kashmir but also Other areas in India such as Naxal.

The SATP figure on Pakistan in same period is 100 including 61 security forces killed by rebels in Quetta academy in October.

61 people killed in quetta were not attacked by any rebels.Rebellion is almost over. 90 percent of them have surrendered or are neutralized. ISIS did that brutal attack.. They are not rebels but cruel international terrorists which even eye india to conquer.
