Keep to the article.

We can discuss Salafis elsewhere,

You're the one who brought it up by making a broad and sweeping statement against such a large segment of the Muslim population. I don't blame you for wanting to whimper away from your bigotry now.

What a joke of a thread!!!

No proper link to the opening thread and still is being discussed with great fervor by some posters.

Mods!!! Kindly lock, seal & dispose this thread to trash can. Threads such as these simply bring down the quality of discussion on a forum where a poster posts his figment of imagination & few others hold the tail & join the ride.

.
The LOL is on you for being so quick on the draw without realising the stupidity of the article where the numbers and statement contradict!

AIDS in Indian Military Forces is not a matter to laugh at least not for you guys. I never agreed to the figures. Open up your eyes and view the question marks on my original post. I understand Indian Military is shy to give exact figures and i am sure they would be alarming. I think Indian Military should allocate a budget for proper screening of their personnal.

This is not a stupid article, it states fact, may be not the figures. I am not forcing any one to comment. So those who do not wish to comment are welcome not to do so.

I have seen a habbit of you guys going after words not the material. Make it constructive and admit your govt has probably done nothing to address this alarming issue.

Firstly i never INVITED you to discuss. If you do not wish to discuss, there are thousands of other threads posts here you can choose. Secondly, admit the fact that Indian Govt is doing very less to prevent the epidemic now eating your military rather armed forces like cancer.

This is an open thread & any member who deems it necessary can make a post. He doesn't need any invitation from you. This is a thread not your personal party where admission is exclusive to invitation only.

If MODS feel inappropriate they can delete the comments. I felt this thread is worthless & therefore I reported it to Mods. If any Mod takes it rationally then most likely this thread would end up in trash can in few hours.

Post proper links. I am not here to discuss your imagination.

Dear Pakistani and Indian Members,

HIV is a malaise which swept thru the whole world two decades ago however the West realised the same and today HIV is as controllable as any incurable disease such as cancer, TB etc. This is not happening in both Pakistan or India. Screening and treatment is non existent in both countries and I hope forums like this and others make people sit up in both your countries.

While you all may enjoy the occassional flame bait please stop and think of the million sufferers in your own countries and their plight. I also think though what Dr Umer has posted here is more to do with a flame bait than with the intention of gaining knowledge we as forum members should shoot the message and not the messanger or tell the MOD to close the thread.

Dr Umer since your concerned about the Indian Armed forces I have taken the liberty of doing some research for you to put your mind at ease.

Regards

6,180 HIV/AIDS patients in Indian armed forces

New Delhi: Every day at least one member of the Indian armed forces is being detected with HIV/AIDS.

"Every month we are getting 30 to 40 HIV/AIDS cases among our personnel. Currently we have 6,180 HIV/AIDS patients among our ranks, but the infection rate is lower than in civilians," Lieutenant-General Yogendra Singh, director general of the Armed Forces Medical Services (AFMS), said here on Saturday.

This year alone (by the end of November), 323 personnel of the three armed forces - army, navy and air force - have been detected with the HIV/AIDS. In 2006, health authorities had found 409 HIV positive cases among the armed forces.

"We (the armed forces) have a strength of around 1.5 million. There are mainly two ways through which these people are getting infected - unsafe sex and injectible drug use. We have 10 centres across the country to treat such personnel," Singh told reporters.

Asked if the services of these personnel are terminated, he said: "There are four stages of the disease. If someone is in the fourth stage and not eligible to serve the country, then his job is terminated, but the rest get treatment and continue in the service."

Singh said all those who are HIV positive are not in the last stage. "Maybe, around two percent of these personnel are in the last stage."

Lieutenant-General Saibal Mukherjee, Director General of Medical Services (Army), said that the armed forces had reported 461 cases of HIV/AIDS in 2005 and 475 in 2004.

"We are carrying out a massive information, education and communication campaign among our personnel, and have certainly achieved success. The trend is decreasing," Mukherjee told IANS.

According to officials, the AFMS has undertaken many research projects that include improved diagnostics and treatment, and control modalities for tropical disease and HIV/AIDS.

"There are 10 immunodeficiency centres that are responsible for providing latest treatment to these patients," Mukherjee added.

India is home to 2.5 million HIV/AID patients, including 80,000 children below the age of 14.

Nine more armed forces hospitals are coming across the country and plans are afoot to induct 10,590 new health professionals to meet growing health demands and reduce doctors and patients ratio in the defence service.

Currently, there were 127 armed forces hospitals and scores of ambulances with emergency medical facilities attached to them.

What on earth is the point of this thread apart from flaming?

I was under the impression that the Indian army was around 1 million strong and I can't see an army managing that level of sick individuals.

Dear Sir,

Thank you very much for your detailed answer. This post was just for informative purpose but certain elements take it personal. It was not intended to hurt anyones feelings. I think your detailed answer serves the purpose.

Confusion !!! Whats the correct figure ? 6,180 HIV/AIDS patients in Indian armed forces OR 5 million Indian army men are HIV positive as per title of this thread.

What a contrast :undecided: OR someone got doctorate for this :cheesy:

The report mixed up Indian and army together. It was stated till last year that 5 million Indians are HIV+ which after proper screening done in new survey was found to be 2.3 million. If only somebody wasn't born yesterday then he should know that total strength of Indian army is 1.2 million so having five million people with HIV infection is mathematically impossible.

I am old for forums. The post was directed towards title poster need I explain more ?

Who the Dickens old Umar is denying that there is no HIV in India or Indian Army?

What exactly has the article brought out that is not well known? Yes, what exactly, except that bogus figure of 5 million South Asian= 5 million of the Indian Army? And you pretend to innocently ask. If you are a Dr as you claim, then you should know of the health issues around you and the world!

That is still OK. You then make fun that people don't know the strength of the IA!!And you dish out Wikipedia with the flourish of a UN Mandate!!

And then that appendage Xy-something or the other goes personal!! I don't blame him either, since he is not quite up to it to join in anything intellectual or factual!!
