4th Combat Force akin to the USMC for power projection.

I was wondering should India have a 4th Combat force (Not counting Coast Guard as combatants) as a service branch of the Indian Armed forces. Something similar to USMC.

Draw combatants from all the services including the PMF's along with raising a few. Have shared resources like artillery, amphibious & air capabilities. Some special Op's can also be integrated into this.

Would this be a logistical nightmare?
Would there be friction between the new service & the existing ones when it comes to resources?
Would it give rise to a 2nd Army/Navy kind of deal (as with USMC-many claim so)?
How does it affect SFC?

Discuss guys.

I was really hoping you would reply. Too short though.
WOuld you mind elaborating it a bit.

Sure mate. From what I have the IN has ambitious plans to raise a 15-20,000 strong Marine unit by 2020-22 with their own logistics and firepower and logistics (arty/ICV/trucks) and they will this require heavy lift helos which the IN is also looking at (MV-22,CH-53K etc). The name of this force will be Sagar Prahari Bal but many have wrongly assumed this force is purely for coastal/force protection duties. These guys will operate off the 4-6 LHD/LLD the IN is procuring in the next decade.

Give it a few years bro and things will become a lot clearer.

actually the original plan was to raise an entirely independent arm within the Indian Armed Forces in the model of the U.S.M.C. but due to protest by the I.N.(as they are the most likely one to provide logistics to this new force) it was decided that the Force will be under the operational command of the I.N.the I.N. has already drawn up a plan to raise this force(which will be approximately a division strong) by 2027 and they will equip this new force with literally everything from arty to amphibious ICVs to light and medium tanks minus a mini air force as the I.N.N.A. will provide them with air cover.they will operate somewhere between 4-6 LPDs and LHDs(most probably the Mistral class) and their name will be Indian Expeditionary Force/Indian Amphibious Force and not Sagar Prahari Bal(S.P.B. is totally responsible for shore based protection duties)
p.s.:-this is what my source(who is an active officer of I.N.) told me,so please don't ask me to provide a link as i simply can't.

Hmmm, this broadly is in line with what I have been told except for the name part.

FYI bro, the SPB is NOT in charge if all coastal protection duties of India that is the ICG, marine police and IN as a whole. The SPB purely acts as force protection right now ie guarding IN bases from the sea.

+ @Mike_Brando I hope the name is better than that. "Indian Expeditionary force" how unimaginative. At least call them marines.

I am back.

I have also heard that IA has a long term plan, eventually take out the ballistic missile component out of the artillery divisions, leaving them with cruise missiles,MBRLs and conventional guns. While all tactical/strategic ballistic missiles wil be concentrated under a seperate command similar to chinese 2nd artillery corps. But this will not happen before artillery modernization programme is complete.

@Abingdonboy - the 91st was raised for this reason and though at that time, the word MARINE was nowhere in the vocabulary of our planners, the idea behind this was that an expeditionary force be outlined. And for that matter, the Royal Marines and the US Marines are also [ technically ] expeditionary forces . I would leave this topic to be discussed by more knowledgeable members who have insider knowledge, so I will now step aside and watch the space with eager intent :)

Cheers mate :)

i was also a bit surprised when i heard that name but my friend told me that both of these names are currently in consideration but most probably the Navy will choose the latter one if they don't come up with another name.
btw i know that S.P.B. has been created for the sole purpose of guarding the shore based and other sea borne naval assets,it was my mistake to point out that they were only responsible for coastal protection duty.
but the interesting point according to my friend is that this new force will be totally different from the current S.P.B. as the majority of us here thought that the S.P.B. will eventually expand to become I.N.'s amphibious force.this means that in the coming years the I.N. will have three different forces under its disposal including the MARCOS.

A dedicated marine force is already on its way... but its highly unlikely that it will be independent (That it will become another arm of the Indian Armed FOrces)
