482 of 872 MiGs procured have crashed: India Defence Minister

Sir ,
Since most of the so called bad aircrafts have been lost at the cost of some brave pilots who had the courage to fly them .
Modernisation of these aircrafts should have happenend a lot earlier , maybe in the late 90's .
Now due to loss of these aircrafts the gov. has finally woken from there wet dream and now they realised that they want some modern tech.

If these migs might not had been crashed in such huge nos. then still there would had been no replacement plan for these aircrafts . Such is our govt. :smokin:

We can't put all the blame on Govt either. Remember we were dirt poor during the 90s even struggling to pay for our imports. Not to mention the collapse of our dear ally USSR and the various sanctions puts on us by the West.If Iam not mistaken IAF refers 90s as the lost decade.

hmmm....quite a valid point

It's common knowledge in the West that, excluding the various editions of the AK and the RPG, Russian hardware is junk. It's O.K. for third world countries on a budget, as long as they send them up against more Russian junk. Sent against Western (U.S.) systems and things get ugly for the Russian stuff and the poor b@stards manning it.

.
Why is the USA incapable of taking over North Korea considering it has used mostly Soviet, Chinese or North Korean weapons derived from Soviet designs? The last time USA and its 'allies' tried, they were kicked out of North Korea by 'poor' Chinese soldiers (back then, China was lot poorer than now).

.
He said that India bought 872 MiG planes of various types between 1966 and 1980. These were procured from the erstwhile Soviet Union and also built indigenously at Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd ( HAL).

I would guess that to be the reason. I do not see such a dismal record of crashes in USSR/Russia's history of using Migs.

.
I can't believe this number.... 482 out of 872 ? Ooooooo this should be a world record! :cheesy:

dont level the blame on Russian airplanes. MiG 21 was a hugely popular plane which was sold worldwide. China has bought a few of Mig 21 and made a version of its own which called J-7. You never see as many crashes in rest of world as iaf. not only Mig 21, iaf have been crashing a no of other models in their stockpile that flies:

Another Mirage 2000 down 5-Apr-12
A Second crash- IAF MIRAGE-2000 CRASHES, PILOT SAFE 5-Mar-12
IAF plane crashes near Chennai 31-Jan-12
AN-32 crash lands, IAF orders probe 22-Jan-12
BSF helicopter crashes while landing in Raipur 15-Jan-12
Sukhoi30-MKI crashes near Pune; both pilots safe 13-Dec-11
MiG-21 crashes in Haryana, pilot ejects safely 2-Dec-11
MiG-29 crashes in Himachal Pradesh, pilot missing 19-Oct-11
IAF MiG-21 crashes in Rajasthan, pilot ejects safely 7-Oct-11
IAF fighter jet MiG-21 crashes in Punjab, pilot ejects 6-Sep-11
MiG-21 crashes near Bikaner, pilot killed 2-Aug-11
Exclusive video of Faridabad air crash 26-May-11
Four Army men killed in helicopter crash in Sikkim 22-Apr-11
IAF helicopter crashes in Jammu, 8 injured 14-Dec-10
3 IAF personnel killed in helicopter crash 12-Sep-10

the record was first broken many years ago I guess. Now iaf are scaling new heights one better (worse) than the former records set also by indians! incredible india!

I don't see why others shouldn't be mocking the IAF's record. Yes when India bought them, she was dirt poor, BUT when the time came to replace parts in them, stinginess overruled standard operating procedures for cheaper parts. Shouldn't have happened, and despite all the crap other's are posting in this thread, India has paid for it with the loss of those fine young pilots, and civilians.....it was bound to happen eventually, you put **** in your machines that does not pass standard checks, it was going to bite the IAF in the *** eventually.

. . .
its the reality, not BS.

Its not, HAL is not the problem. The MiG-21 is by far the best fighter aircraft Russia has ever made and Indian pilots are good.
IAF's record with the MIG has more to do with flight envelope restrictions and pilot stick time.

And there are several Su-30 jets crash by IAF in 2011-2012.

Not to forget the supa-dupa J-10 ..... planes with less than 10 or even 5 years in service.... and already falling down...

Mig-21s in IAF were last built in 1980s ... and have served atleast 20 to 25 in service. Even Su-30s have 15+years of service.

.
Somehow Egyptian MiG-21s dont seem to crash that often. Su-30 is also a modern plane, why does it crash so frequently in the den of Hindutva radicalism?
