What's new

45 years ago today, man landed on the moon

Their moon rocket N1 exploded two weeks before Apollo 11 on the cosmodrome.

NASA knew it through CIA flights but proceeded with their expedited deadline since they were already ready for it. If that rocket hadnt exploded, we may have seen Soviets first on the moon too.

Rest is history.

Even if that rocket had not exploded I don't think they had the lander ready. Also remember their strategy required 2 launches to join up.

what happened to soviets who planned to explore venus like americans had planned to explore mars?
Soviet had sent something to venus. It is still there. I read about it somewhere.

but i don't think considering how extreme hot venus is, soviets had tried venus

well the nazis had initial experience with basic rocket technologies good enough to escape gravitational field

10 probes of venera series did successfully landed on venus.

They were soviets, they couldve tried to land unprepared just to beat the americans like they did with the first man in space.

Yuri Gagarin wasnt the first russian in space, he was just the first who landed in a presentable condition.

The first guy in space was Vlad ilyushin, son of the famous aircraft designer, he landed alive but was so shaken up mentally he couldnt be presented, 3 days later Gagarin was presented. The Vladdimir guy later died mysteriously, with only his finger being found in a plane crash.

Fishy I know :D
He was soviet too.. o_O

What happened to Soviets when it cam to land on moon first??

Actually there is a a rumour that he was not the first guy in space, there was another guy who worked for Sukhoi who made the trip, but he was injured quite seriously and it would take him some time to heal. Russians anxious to announce it to the world big celebration hence they replaced him with Yuri.

Soviets sent a lot of satellites/landers to venus, more than any other country in the world. They were ridiculously obsessed with venus. None of the landers remain, atleast in working condition. This is due to terrible atmosphere in venus, it just destroys everything that enters.

In fact a lot of them were destroyed within half an hour, the longest a probe lasted was for 2 hours.
