A total of 42 members of the ethnic Mroo Nationalist Party (MNP) surrendered to the Bangladesh Army in Alikadm upazila of Bandarban district on Wednesday.

Lt Col Shahid Mustafa, Commanding Officer of Alikadam army zone, said, “A total of 42 MNP members, including Busue Mroo, Cing Y Mroo, Sakraw Mroo and Reng Hing Mroo, surrendered to the army officials at the Puamuhuri army camp.”

“But they did not deposit any arms,” he added.

Sources said the MNP members, hailing from Alikadam and Thanchi upazilas of the district,

had long been involved in criminal activities like extortion and abduction.

Army officials quoted the MNP members as saying that they had surrendered with a view to coming back to normal life.

Lt Col Mustafa said the army personnel would provide the much-needed assistance to them if they returned to normal life

Government should give ear to the grievances of indigenous people. I'm against any effort (intentional or unintentional) to change the lifestyle/culture of a people. Many of us are insensitive towards other people.

I wonder what did they do with them??? I dont want these arms to land in the arms of criminals and gangs

ANyway how about recruiting these former rebels in the army(after character evaluation, other test etc) and raise a mountain regiment??? I mean they are already familiar with the area and knows how to navigtate and handle arms.

They will be able to earn a living and have respect from the community at the same time.

That would be risky. They may not have surrendered out of free will. Raising a mountain division recruiting from indigenous people is a good idea anyway.

If they hadnt surrendered out of free will, they would have been caught with weapons.

I meant there may have been other factors behind their decision to surrender like fear, hardship, inability to continue a struggle for long etc.

Thats the reasons for their surrender. If we can accomodate them, they would not need to go back and carry these criminal activities ever again

Who are they really? I find no information about these MNP or their activities inside Bangladesh except the news you mentioned in OP.

Avisheik has raised a strong valid point. Most of the "foot soldiers" in insurgents are usually doing it for money and desperate to earn a living. They have nothing to do with the corrupted ideologies of senior leaderships who brainwash them and give them false hopes to join their "cause". This makes them expendable and since they're shown the wrong picture, they don't believe mainstream people.

The best way to get these guys into mainstream national path is to integrate them into Army. It would cost lesser to your government to train them since many of them have an idea about military exercises as they've trained by the insurgent groups.

Look at ULFA for example. Their loony leader Paresh Baruah now sits in either Burma or China and keeps howling while a massive amount of his so-called Army gave up militancy, surrendered weapons and have joined mainstream national life here, earning a honest living.

The best way to get people out of militancy is to give them the alternative to earn a decent simple living what they are looking for. :)

Good achievement Bangladesh.

Never heard of MNP neither there is any more insurgency in CHT. Even UPDF dont attack government installation. These group probably surrender to army for getting some benefits. They could surrender arms as they never had one.

Govt should f****g seriously look at these peoples concerned matters. They are Bangladeshi. Govt should take steps to develop those three regions. And eradicate un-employment, poverty step by step.

.
The region should be a stable one like other parts of Bangladesh and for that govt. should seriously work on bringing this people into mainstream like works in main cities all over the country.Govt. should distribute free TVs with cable connections(restricted to Bangla channels only) among every families there, that way we can make them learn about our mainstream culture, how things work in this country and the psychological impact would be great after that.

I am serious about the TV part

U have a issue here.

Without bengali settlement the improvement wont come. But they deny this.We cant waste our money on them for their improvement. They have to earn this. But without co-operating with bengali community how they will do it.

Yet how much opportunity we have given them thats unbelievable. So who r educated they should take steps for their improvement.

Its frustrating that we have a huge land there but cant properly use that.

.
You just can't go and settle there,it'll look awkward to them as they are living there for thousands of years. At first they need to be included with the mainstream and thats our responsibility as majority. On top of that the kind of Bengali people settled there are not that friendly to them. The ground reality is they are not given equal opportunities.
