Media should know its limits
Saturday, April 26, 2014 - There is need to differentiate between attempt on Hamid Mir’s life and Geo’s blatant display of recklessness and self-conceitedness by insinuating against the premier agency of Pakistan before any inquiry or investigations. What kind of a freedom of expression is it that has possessed our media and commentriat that they know of no bounds? Surely, freedom of expression is democracy’s essential part, but in no way can this freedom be a licence to insult others and show disrespect to the country’s institutions by maligning them. There is a perception that detractors of Pakistan have been advancing Pakistan enemies’ agenda of tarnishing Pakistan military’s image wittingly or unwittingly. However, some guests and politicians in the talk shows expressed disdain to the arrogance and smirks of anchorpersons; and now they have the chance to vent out their feelings. There is widespread perception that media has crossed all the limits. Sheikh Raheel of the PML-N was one of those who were candid in airing such views in a talk show on Wednesday.

As regards attack on Hamid Mir, even ISPR condemned it, and described it as deplorable. Anyhow, Judicial Commission has been constituted, and it should see all the evidence from Hamid Mir, and also the remarks, hints and insinuations by Hamid Mir against the ISI in various programs. However, Geo TV quoting Amer Mir, brother of Hamid Mir, accused the ISI and its chief Lt. General Zaheerul Islam of the attack on Hamid Mir. Geo TV also stated that Hamid Mir had sent recorded video to the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) implicating the ISI in any attempt on his life. Meanwhile, daily ‘Pakistan Today’ revealed quoting the CPJ sources that they had not received any recorded video in this regard. Amnesty International has also come out with a statement that Hamid Mir had informed it about threats from the ISI and Taliban. In November 2012, Hamid Mir had narrowly escaped a bid on his life when an explosive device was planted under the chassis of his car.

The TTP had accepted the responsibility for the attempt on Hamid Mir stating that it targeted the journalist due to his acerbic remarks. According to another report, the TTP leadership was furious on his remarks during a talk show held after attack on Malala Yousafzai. In the past, there was a lot of confusion when Shahzad Salim was attacked and killed because he had written many articles with regard to the differences between the TTP and its affiliated groups. He often talked about threats from Taliban and intelligence agencies, and third party could have taken advantage. Our journalists take the pleas that to keep them abreast of the developments and to seek information they have to have contacts with the agencies as well as militant groups. But they should confine them to objective reporting and should not play the role of a mediator or take sides. Some anchorpersons, analysts and panelists have been subjecting the military to scathing criticism day in and day out. On the other hand, there are some patriotic media groups that are not scared of alien agencies or their agents how powerful they may be.

Hamid Mir had become controversial when he demanded that Pakistan should seek apology from Bangladesh, and secondly for overplaying the issue of missing persons. In 2010, when the issue of his audiotape of his conversation with interlocutor of the so-called Asian Tigers or Punjabi Taliban came to light, quite a few of his colleagues had criticized him. Media in Pakistan had come in the line of fire when some of the media men who had earlier all praise for the judiciary, highlighted the Arsalan Iftikhar-Malik Riaz case. Two-member bench of Supreme Court of Pakistan in its verdict had remarked: “The ethic and legal framework of the media requires fairness and objectivity; it requires that journalists conduct due diligence before reporting any news so that rumors and insinuations are filtered out, particularly in matters of grave significance such as ones arising in this case”. Unfortunately, the judiciary did not take the commentriat to task when they were discussing the proceedings of the cases, and often speculated about the verdict and the stance the defence lawyers would take.

The nation witnessed some anchorpersons in the TV talk shows unleash avalanche of blistering censure against military and intelligence agencies in Pakistan. Otherwise also, there was criticism on media trial of politicians when reporting the cases in the courts. Though most of media men are condemning attack on Hamid Mir, Geo anchor persons and editors are criticizing anchorpersons of other channels for their condemnation of Geo TV’s act of casting aspersions on the ISI and its chief Lt. General Zaheerul Islam. Geo media men say that anchorpersons of other channels are jealous of Hamid Mir because of the status he enjoys being the most prominent of all the anchorpersons. Some analysts are saying that strong institutions i.e. ISI and Geo group are at loggerheads. How unfortunate that they are comparing the institution that gives supreme sacrifices for the defence of the country with a media group accused of disgracing the premier agency.

During proceedings of three-day judicial conference organized by Pakistan Supreme Court Bar Association in September 2011, the participants among other things agreed that “there should be no media trial and the media should not be allowed to encroach upon the space of the judiciary”.

It is unfortunate that some media men, especially those associated with a particular media group, act in an irresponsible manner, insinuating against the ISI, which are eyes and ears of military. Not in the distant past, when senior Supreme Court Judge Javed Iqbal’s parents were killed, newspapers and some anchorpersons and analysts on TV channels, directly or in a subtle manner, accused intelligence agencies while making a reference to missing persons’ case. Media had insinuated that because Justice (r) Javed Iqbal was heading the commission for missing persons, intelligence agencies could have done it. Later, Naveed Iqbal step-brother of Justice Javed Iqbal had admitted having planned murder of his parents, but they would not show remorse over their irresponsible comments.

نہیں نہیں حضور نہ تو میں کسی سیلاب یا قحط کے بعد ملنے والی کسی امداد کی قطار میں کھڑا ہوں اور نہ ہی کسی انکم سپورٹ پروگرام کا ATM Card تھامے بینک کی کسی مشین کے سامنے. میں تو بس اپنے کمپیوٹر کے سامنے بیٹھامیمن گوٹھ سے ملنے والی چار تشدد زدە لاشیںدیکھ رہا ہوں اور اپنی باری کا بڑی بے صبری سے انتظار کر رہا ہوں۔

سنا ہے مرنے والے انسان تھے؟؟؟ میرا مطلب ہے آج سے زیادە نہیں بس کچھ دو ہفتے پہلے تک مکمل طور پر جیتے جاگتے کھاتے پیتے اور سب سے بڑی بات شہر کی سب بڑی یونیورسٹی میں پڑھتے لکھتے نوجوان سے انسان تھے بیچارے۔۔

اب ان کا قصور کیا تھا اور ان چاروں کا اتنی عجلت میں مارا جانا کیوں ضروری تھا اِس بات کا جواب تو آپ کی پولیس کے وە عظیم اور بہادر سپوت ہی دے سکتے ہیں جن کے ہاتھوں میں خود اپنے دو دوستوں کے ہمراە آج سے کچھ مہینے پہلے ائیرپورٹ کے علاقے میں صبح تقریباً ساڑھے پانچ بجے اُس وقت ایک پولیس مقابلہ کا شکار ہوتے ہوتے بچا جب اپنے ایک دوست کو اسلام آباد کی فلائیٹ کے لئے سی آف کرنے جا رہا تھا. ماڈل کالونی اور ائیرپورٹ کے بیچ ایک یوٹرن پر اچانک سامنے سے آنے والی ایک کالے رنگ کی پرائیوٹ ہنڈا سٹی کار نے ہمیں یوں روکا جیسے کہ یوٹرن لینا کوئی جرم ہو. گاڑی رکتے ہی پانچ مسلح دہشت گردوں سے زیادە خوفناک غنڈوں کی شکل والے 'اہلکار' ہم پہ بندوقیں تان کر ایسے کھڑے ہو گئے کہ ہمارے پاس کلمہ پڑھنے کے علاوە کوئی دوسرا راستہ بچا ہی نہیں تھا وە تو شکر کہ میڈیا کے پریس کارڈ نے جان بخشی کروائی ورنہ ہم تین بھی کسی گوٹھ میں مسخ شدە پائے جاتے۔۔

آج کا یہ خط قطعی آپ سے اُن بیچارے پولیس والوں کی شکایت کرنے کے لئے نہیں لکھ رہا ہوں، آج مقصود ہے تو بس اپنے عزیز واقارب کے بارے میں آپ کو کچھ معلومات فراہم کرنا تاکہ جب اُن کی باری آئے تو آپ اور آپ کی پولیس کو زیادە دقت نہ ہو، کیونکہ جس ڈھنگ سے جس ڈگر پہ آپ کے جوان رواں دواں ہیں باری تو سب کی آنی ہے بس کسی کی جلدی اور کسی کی زرا دیر سے۔۔

تو حضور میرے بھی چھوٹے بڑے بھائی اسی شہر میں آپ کی بادشاہت میں بستے ہیں۔۔ ایک کسی موبائیل کمپنی میں کال سنٹر کی جاب کرتا ہے دوسرا ایک پرائیویٹ بنک میں ملازم ہے ایک کسی کولا بنانے والی کمپنی میں ہوتا ہے اور چوتھا جس کی فکر سب سے زیادە ہے وە کراچی یونیورسٹی میں ماسٹرز کا طالبعلم ہے۔۔

حضور چھوٹے بھائی اولادوں کی طرح ہوتے ہیں اِس لئے گزارش صرف اتنی کرنی تھی کہ اُن کی باری آپ کے جن بھی جوانوں کے ہاتھوں آئے اُنہیں بس اتنا کہہ دیجیئے گا کہ زرا بچوں کا سینہ کم چاک کریں، ہڈیاں جتنی کم سے کم توڑیں آخری غسل کے لئے آسانی رہتی ہے اگر انہیں آنکھیں کسی کو عطیہ نہیں کرنی ہوں تو نکالنے سےگریز کریں اور اگر پورے بتیس دانت منہ میں صحیح سلامت واپس چلے جائیں تو کیا ہی بات ہو۔

ویسے حضور سنا تھا آپ اس ملک کی سب سے بڑی جمہوری جماعت سے تعلق رکھتے ہیں پھر ہمیشہ آپکے ہی دور میں ہی کیوں یہ ماورائے قانون و آئین قتال ہوا کرتے ہیں. بینظیر پارک میں رینجرز کے ہاتھوں قتل ہونے والا سرفراز شاە ہو یا کالعدم امن کمیٹی کے 70 کارندے یا 'سادە لباس بھوتوں' کا نشانہ بننے والے ایم کیو ایم کے 25 کارکنان ہوں، سب کو مارنے سے پہلے اگر عدالتوں کا ایک پھیرا ہی لگوالیتے تو وہاں بیٹھے لوگوں کو بھی کچھ مصروفیت مل جاتی اور شائید کوئی ایک آدھ فضول جان ضائع ہونے سے بچ جاتی۔۔

اِس سے زیادہ لکھنے کی ہمت نہیں، ہو سکے تو کچھ ضرور کیجیئے گا ویسے اِس عمر میں کچھ ہونا زرا مشکل ہی ہے۔۔
