The English language name Singapore comes from Malay Palembang Singapura meaning "Lion City," which was in turn derived from Tamil.[1] Singa comes from the Tamil word singam (சிங்கம், which means "lion". 'Oor (ஊர் in Tamil means "town" and is a common suffix in many Indian names of places. The Name is due to resemblance of Singapore map to a Lion's head [2]
