Arrested Chinese youths may not be spies: Police

ITANAGAR, June 27: Preliminary reports of the joint interrogation of four Chinese nationals conducted on Sunday by the Army, ITBP, IB and police personnel today hinted that the four arrested youths at Tuting in Upper Siang district are not Chinese spies. Sources informed that no documents or any evidence was found on them that could prove that the intruders were spies.

The four Chinese nationals, including a 23-year-old girl, were arrested on Saturday from Pango village under Tuting subdivision of the district bordering China. Initial reports had said they walked for 18 days from their country’s border to reach Indian territory.

Upper Siang SP B Taloh said this evening that nothing suspicious was found on them after the joint interrogation. However, he did not completely rule out the ‘spy’ angle and said that further interrogations would be conducted before giving the youths a clean chit.

As per reports, the youths, all in their twenties, were Tibetans and fled their country to look out for their relatives at Tuting, Sikkim and Nepal. With an ambition to seek blessings from His Holiness, the Dalai Lama at Dharamsala, they expressed intentions to settle down in India.
