More than 4.5 million solar home systems have been installed in the rural areas, bringing energy at the doorsteps of 20 million people who live in the off grid areas of the country.

Power Cell Director General Mohammad Hossain made the announcement at the closing ceremony of 8th Bangladesh Infrastructure Innovation and Development Expo and Dialogue 2017 on Friday.

“Since 2009, the access to electricity have been increased to 80% from 47% and per capita power generation have been increased to 407 kWh from 220 kWh.”

“The number of consumers has more than doubled from 10 million to 24 million by this time and the system loss has been reduced significantly from 18.21% in 2009 to 11.67% in 2017 which saved almost Tk 52 billion,” added Hossain.

State-run Sustainable and Renewable Energy Development Authority (Sreda) chairman Md Anwarul Islam Sikder stressed on a clear and long-term stable policy framework and support schemes to unlock the potential of the promotion and dissemination of the use of renewable energy.

“Public perception needs to be improved about the benefits of green and clean energy technologies,” Sikder added.

Sreda member Siddique Zobair said that Sreda had been working for the promotion, facilitation and regulation of all the aspects of energy conservation and the development of sustainable and renewable energy in the country.

Bangladesh Infrastructure Finance Fund Limited CEO S M Formanul Islam, in his speech, emphasised on how to define Green Building.

“A building does not become a Green Building only after installing a solar panel, there are some other requirements,” said Formanul.

“We want to ensure a greener Bangladesh by investing in the sustainable development projects,” he added.

This is good to hear, investment in enivornment is always good, especially if it can benefit people with electricity too. A focused effort should be to make Dhaka specifically more environment friendly, the pollution levels there aren't good for anyone.
