3D prototype of Turkey’s first indigenous car unveiled

2019-08-05
The first 3D prototype of Turkey’s indigenous automobile went on display at a council meeting of the company formed to develop the national car, independent news site T24 reported on Monday.

The model of the car, based on a 1:4 scale, was unveiled at Turkey's Automobile Joint Venture Group (TOGG) meeting on Monday, where Turkey’s Minister of Industry and Technology Mustafa Varank was in attendance, T24 said.

Production on Turkey’s first domestic automobile, which will be electric with a range of 500 km, is expected to begin in the second half of 2021 and become available for commercial sales in 2022.

TOGG includes vehicle manufacturers BMC, Anatolia Endüstri Holdings, Kıraça Holding, Türkcell, and Zorlu Holding, all companies that enjoy good relations with Turkey’s ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP).

The project is being coordinated by Rifat Hisarcıklıoğlu, the head of the Union of Chambers and Commodity Exchanges of Turkey.

The prototype of the car was examined and the TOGG council was given information on the features of the car, Varank said.

Coordinator Hisarcıklıoğlu said the prototype of the automobile would be presented to the public by the end of year.

The flagship project is expected to provide employment for 20,000 people.

Why do they want their own car? What benefits does it bring over mass produced and cheaper cars?

Erdoğan personally thinks that a big country should produce its own tanks, weapons, planes, copters, ..., ..., ... and cars. That's why he pushes on it too hard since Turkey one of the biggest car manufacturers in the world. It's kinda weird not to have to own car brand.

No it isn't that weird. Americans buy Japanese and foreign cars much more than American brands because of cheaper costs and higher reliability. Does he think car parts will be embargoed in a conflict with Cyprus?

US has this too and there isn't recognised prestige. Japan sells more cars in America due to low costs and high reliability. Good luck but it will be hard to make the car succesful in todays crowded market of well established companies like Toyota, Tesla, Honda, etc.

I'm not trolling, even Americans buy foreign cars a lot of the time while having an extensive automotive industry.

The car industry is a huge prestige-factor for larger countries. The US build huge import barriers to protect its industry, forcing the Japanese brands you are talking about to produce in the US and source sub-systems from American companies. Same goes with the EU, which has effectively shut the door for Japanese and American mid-market brands.

Volkswagen AG has chosen Turkey over Bulgaria for the construction of a new factory means the indigenous car is already set to face stiff competition from a German automotive giant.

The German public-service broadcaster ARD reported that Erdoğan’s government had offered Volkswagen lucrative super incentives of its own, including subsidies and tax breaks, to secure the company’s investment, going so far as to personally put his name down as guarantor.

Sources in Berlin and Ankara say the factory will produce Volkswagen Passat cars, as well as some models from its Czech subsidiary Skoda and Spanish subsidiary Seat.

The reports stated that a large number of the luxury Passat models set to be produced will go to Turkish public institutions, which often use Volkswagen and Audi cars.

Tesla is a new brand in this crowded segment I bet you would have said the same thing if you were not trolling..

We are 80 million ppl in turkey there is and should be a place for our own car

But more we should focus on marketing and selling and on our Agrar products Netherland is small but effective we lack the effectiveness and logistics for example we can produce qiona but who could sell it there are places in turkey wich have extremely good conditions for that but no one is responsible and has the logistical capability to provide the farmers that means farmers could produce this or that but they cannot sell it for their own

This also counts for our ppl who you see sometimes on news or gazette they build something great but it does not go further because of no responsibility and lacking management
