willn't it make sense to transfer these weapons to ANA rather than to destroy them??Make ANA stronger,thats what it'll do.it'll be symbolic that USA come to rescue Afghanistan from Taliban's clutches and leaving them making strong.that will make difference of their departure against soviet's(which made Afganistan weak).plus,with these surplus weapons,ANA will be armed to the teeth.

They will be given the weapons they can operate but any advanced platforms will probably be withheld.

that's correct -- the arms which were used to blast soviet gunships which were bombing afghan villages

i was at an interesting seminar at the NDU somewhat recently; a young NCO (American) posed a comment disguised as a question to the speaker on this very subject

i got the impression that at least a good number of servicemen (not sure about top brass) distrust the ANA after a spate of those "green on blues"....understandably the mood wasn't the most 'receptive'

it's more expensive to bring all that shyt back but then again its also a quagmire to leave the shyt there and hope it doesnt end up in the hands of the whackos; in order to help promote morale of the less than modestly equipped/disciplined ANA (which still has a lot to prove to itself, to Afghanistan and to NATO) they probably will have to maintain the trainers and hence maintain and later distribute equipments -- my guess things like towed howitzers like the M triple 7s which have been deployed for quite some time or in other cases simply destroy anything too sensitive and use the money that wouldve been used to bring the shyt back to instead subsidize small arms/ammo.

The equipment includes trucks, aircraft, and armored vehicles — most of which are controlled by the Army.

Because the Afghanistan terrain is mountainous and landlocked, transport would be difficult. But leaving it behind intact could put the equipment in the wrong hands.

Intentionally USA wouldn't leave anything valuable back but even when you don't, you leave a lot. Thinking about crashed stealth helicopter which destroyed on OBL raid is one example of such incidents.

Now there is a hidden meaning behind this effort. USA knows ANA is nothing and even if they hand over this hardware to ANA, they will eventually end up going into the hands of Taliban. ANA is so non-existing in the power equation in Afghanistan.
