34 US warships to guard Obama in India

No, not enough firepower to invade a nation, let alone India. Not enough to do anything except maybe some ELINT. Basically a show of force. What more do you expect 3000 policemen to achieve? FBI or Secret Service, they are still policemen and not Marines. How many Marines were needed to capture Iwo Jima? Definitely many more than just a brigade. 3000 is not even a brigade strength. And Iwo Jima is so small a speck in the Pacific ocean that it can hardly be seen.

But there is a lesson in all this. This is the kind of stuff that a Head of State should be backed up with, during a foreign visit, if the visit is to mean anything. Perhaps someday we can give this kind of security cover to visiting Indian Head of State.

Obama security team not monkeying around | News.com.au

JUST days ahead of President Barack Obama's trip to India, authorities are going to extraordinary lengths to protect him, even removing coconuts from trees to prevent them falling on his head.

"The coconuts were falling off, so we requested the local authorities here to remove the remainder," the executive secretary of the Mumbai neighborhood of Mani Bhavan, Meghshyam Ajgaonkar, told reporters.

The municipal authorities removed the coconuts near the city's Gandhi museum to eliminate any chance of them hitting the US President during his three-day visit which begins tomorrow.

Ajgaonkar said the precaution was taken as local and US officials undertook security sweeps of the museum and library.

American preparations were equally extensive according to NDTV, a private television company in India. It reported that a fleet of 34 American warships, including one aircraft carrier, is set to protect Mr Obama offshore during his stay.

The extreme security measures will be put in place to prevent any attacks similar to the 2008 terror strikes in Mumbai.

NDTV also said around 800 rooms were booked for the president's entourage at the Taj Hotel and the Hyatt. Two jets and a fleet of more than 40 cars will also protect the president.

In New Delhi 80-foot-high towers are being built to keep watch on the president's movements, and the activities of the local monkey population, The Times of India reported.

Trained monkey catchers will be employed to keep the wild monkeys away from Obama.

"As several incidents of monkey-menace have been reported from the area, we are keeping a watch on the simians," a police officer said.

I think there is already one US AC in Indian Ocean, they might just diverted to Mumbai coast, as a standby if in case of something like 26/11 happens.
I still don't see any reason for a carrier to be parked in our port. Goodness forbid even if something similar to that happens, what will F/A-18s do? This is a sprawling metropolitan city we're talking about not some barren land in Afghanistan. Who're they going to bomb?

I think it is just an overhype. Nuclear carriers are not allowed in most ports in India except 2 where the Russian Pyotr Veliky warship and the US carrier (IOR one) have already come once before and that is in Vishakapattanam in east. Only our Navy carriers and non-nuclear warships can dock at Mumbai. What nonsense article is this!?

Or May be they want to deliver a message to China. could be a possibility, no?

HAHA!
Show off!!
What an idiotic arrangement!

Now i really wish that some terrorist kill this effing obama!!

3000 top officials, 40 planes and 34 warships ... all this just for a 3 day visit??? Why am i having a strange feeling???

i wonder what Americans are thinking -- $2b in tax payers money going to 800 rooms in the taj along with security arrangements and even the fleet :D

seems its killing 2 birds with one stone

a.) an attempt (for whatever its worth) to send some kind of message to P.R.C.

b.) show that our American partners and ''most trusted allies'' mean business and are willing to go out of their way to address hindustan's security/defence/commercial interests

the Americans aren't kidding when they say that these bleeding heart marxist-sympathizers in US government are indeed bankrupting their nation-state (which can be seen by the recent mid-term election results)
