To be honest, it is very difficult to say without being on the ground and knowing the actual facts. These days depending on what sources you read, there will be facts and counter facts for everything. One source says that the mosque was demolished for widening of a National Highway, another says that the mosque was 100 ft away from the highway and there was a stay order against demolition.

These sources in turn have their own source in the form of anecdotes from affected parties. It's not like any of us sitting in our living rooms have accessed any legal document to verify it. Just to be clear, when it comes to expansion of infrastructure, governments always have their way, and sometimes even temples are demolished.

Where I live, a major traffic bottleneck was widened recently and 40-50 shops, mostly owned by Hindus were demolished. I have no clue what those shop owners are doing or if they have resumed their livelihood. This in my opinion is a worse hit than a small place of worship being demolished. Religion is a touchy issue so such incidents make for more sensational headlines. I as a non religious person don't care much about places of worship, unless they are of historical and architectural importance.

What is undeniable though is that polarisation has set-in in India, politics can be played around it, benefits can be reaped. Even so called 'secular' politicians benefit from this. This is also clearly evident in social media. People across the socio-economic divide are taking extreme positions and schooling each other. The intolerance for others' POV is shockingly absent.

I don't know if the comparisons with Hindus in Pakistan are valid. They are a miniscule minority and powerless. They are not politically important at all. If you have large minorities, there will be friction. In your case you do have friction between Pashtuns, Urdu speaking Muslims, Sindhis in Karachi/Sindh and I am sure there is politics played along these lines.
