3 Things We learned From Putin’s “Show” against ISIS | Bilal Abdul Kareem Journalist

On Wednesday Russian President Vladimir Putin put additional weight and support behind Syria’s Bashar Assad. His military, who was already engaged since early 2013 although in the role of supplier and advisor, launched it’s first bombing campaign in Syria. Putin, like his American counterpart Barak Obama, stated that his military was there to fight ISIS.

Here are 3 things we learned from Putins actions this week:
1. Putin, like others, has no real interest in fighting ISIS. Russia has been using the ISIS card to grant itself legitimacy to enter the Syrian conflict militarily, just as the US, France, and others did. Granted ISIS did take the desert city of Palmyra in May of this year, however other than that ISIS momentum has slowed considerably for much of this year. What has given those in Moscow reason to fear is not to be found in Mosul or Raqqa. My proof is that the bombings that Russia has put forward thus far officially amount to approximately 12. Only one of those was in the ISIS stronghold of Raqqa and that was in the countryside, on the outskirts of the province.

The areas of Jisr Shughour and Jabal al-Zawiya have no ISIS presence anywhere near it. These areas were taken from government controlled hands by Jaysh Al Fath in April of this year. The groups involved under the Jaysh Al Fath banner were overwhelmingly Syrian born and bred. How does bombing Jisr Shughour help to fight ISIS when those groups involved are bitter ISIS enemies? It is even purported that US trained fighters were also targeted by the Russian airstrikes. Several days ago the city of Taftanaz, which is on the outskirts of Idlib City was rumored to be hit by, what residents say, was Russian helicopter missile fire. ì interviewed residents who cited that the types of missiles that hit their city were unlike what they had seen used by Bashar Assad’s regime over the past 4 years.

Therefore two realities seem to clear:

A. Putin is in Syria to make sure that Bashar Assad and his regime doesn’t collapse. If it did then that would mean the lone military base Russia has in the entire Middle East would no longer be. This would be a huge setback for Moscow because it’s US rival enjoys the comforts of a military presence in:

Iraq, Kuwait, Bahrain, Turkey, Qatar, UAE, Saudi Arabia, Israel, Jordan and Egypt.

Putin of course cannot simply state that he wants to flex his muscles and spread his influence so he needs a politically correct reason to do so: ISIS. The European Union’s foreign policy chief, Federica Mogherini told Aljazeera:

“His fear is of a complete collapse of the state structures in Syria; this could be one of the reasons Russia is talking in this way, but it could also be willingness to show that Russia is an important, substantial player,” Mogherini said.

B. The destruction of ISIS would mean the destruction of Russia’s reason for a military buildup in the Middle East. Therefore Putin needs Abu Bakr Baghdadi’s group to continue to exist and dominate a few headlines. By allowing ISIS to continue to function Putin stands to gain almost as much as keeping Bashar Assad’s regime operational. This is why we are seeing and are likely to continue to see that most of the bombings will focus on non-ISIS aligned groups.

2. The news media has fallen back into the “Weapons of Mass Destruction” mindset. This means that much of what is stated in the news in recent weeks has focused ONLY on two groups fighting in Syria: the Syrian Regime vs ISIS. This is a narrative that Washington, Moscow, Tehran, and others have been trying hard to get the media to push. The narrative that the Syrian people can either choose Bashar or Baghdadi is one that grants their respective governments legitimacy for their campaigns in Syria. The media seems to have been blinded to the facts on the ground and continues to overlook the huge areas of territory that are controlled by Sunni rebel groups.

3. While Moscow has stated over and over that their goal is to fight ISIS, the proportion of strikes on ISIS controlled territory seems to tell a different tale. Three of the purported twelve strikes have been upon Jaysh Al Fath controlled areas. The skies are abuzz with the sounds of drone aircraft over Idlib City. What Moscow fears most are coalition groups like Jaysh Al Fath. Jaysh Al Fath is a coalition of many of the major Islamic groups fighting in northern Syria fighting under one banner. The face of Jaysh Al Fath and it’s spiritual leader is Dr. Abdullah Muhaysini.

Groups like ISIS are exclusionary. This means that only their version of “real Muslims” can join. This excludes most of the Muslims at large and therefore caps their growth potential. However Sunni groups like Jaysh Al Fath are much more inclusive and they appear to operate on a platform that revolves more around calling non practicing Muslims towards their version of Islam rather than removing their heads. This type of approach has created an atmosphere of trust in the minds of many ordinary Syrians as they are weary of seeing new groups pop up every other week.

thats just cause saudi TOW missiles have malfunctioned and blowed their a$$es up instead .

saudis are going to moscow these days and begging on their doorstep .they can't handle yemen lol. Imagine what Russia would do to them. Back to camel and lizard eating lol.

.
US strategy against ISIS was to let them beat the government forces and when they have taken areas from them, send the FSA aka Al-Qaeda and bomb the $hit out of that place.

Putin doesn't do that, he bombs the cr@p out of both ISIS and FSA.

.
Putin this Putin that. lots of cocksuckerfanboys These days.

i tell you what, Saudis should in fact lower the oil production and double oil Price. Why is Saudi Arabia helping US Warmongerers against Russia? USA is not helping Saudis. Why does Saudi Arabia not cut the oil production so Russia can arm themselfs to grow to a real threat to Europe and USA kuffars?

Let them kuffars kill each other in World War Three with massive Military build up. Saudis can easily use the oil Money to make peace with Asad, Iran and other Muslims. Saudi Money should be invested in Syria.

I trust in Saudis. They will overcome this ugly fake world and find to the routes of Prophet Muhammad (Peace be upon him)

.

I wouldn't worry about Iraq. Iraq is a Shia country allied with Iran. As along as Iran is allied with Russia, it is guaranteed Iraq is allied with Russia.

Some of you people always act like there are much better alternatives than ISIS, as if the groups, excluding ISIS, are all peaceful, political mature, non-terrorists that have great vision for Syria.

Why doesn't anyone better introduce such groups to us? Your point 3 mentions "Abdullah Muhaysini" as a non-ISIS good guy. I have never heard of him, so I searched google.

Is this the guy?
Popular Saudi cleric endorses Islamic Front, calls for cooperation with al Qaeda | The Long War Journal

Hmm..look at that flag behind him...

Also, the link claims he is a Saudi cleric who moved to Saudi. So, that’s what the Syrians wants? Saudi clerics to lead the revolution?

“Dr. Abdallah Muhammad al Muhaysini, a popular Saudi cleric who has relocated to Syria, has used his highly trafficked social media presence to endorse the new Islamic Front formed by some of the leading Syrian insurgent groups. He has also called for the Islamist coalition to cooperate with al Qaeda’s two official branches inside Syria.”

or

"
In late November, he warned in a series of tweets that social media is being used to exacerbate “small” problems and disagreements. The cleric tweeted that he had visited both the Al Nusrah Front and the Islamic Front in the field, calling members of both groups his “brothers.”

On Dec. 3, al Muhaysini commented on reports that two members of ISIS had been killed at a Free Syrian Army checkpoint. Al Muhaysini said the two were “heroes” and asked Allah to accept them as “martyrs.” The cleric praised these ISIS members despite the criticism he has received from the group. He also used the incident to remind all mujahideen that the spilling of Muslim blood is impermissible and that Muslims must work together on the battlefields of Syria."

Maybe the link is wrong and it’s a different Abdullah Muhaysini, so please correct me if I am wrong.

There r 100s of groups fighting a just war against a pagan tyrannical alawite regime. Jaish al-Fatah is a good eg. abt how a a predominantly syrian rebel coalition gains local support against tyranny.

What constitutes political maturity and good vision? Subservience to west, russia , Iran and alawite pagan interest and going for a secular syria ? If that's the case i think vast majority of syrian are politically immature & justifiably so.

So what problem do u have with saudi clerics? U Iranians know what syrian muslims want ? Its a sunni muslim majority country that has seen genocide in the hands of an alawite pagan minority. What do u think the muslims in syria want? That a iranian/russian backed secular genocidal pagan alawite dictator keeps slaughtering them?

Its mind boggling how the whole narrative of syrian civil war against a blood thirsty iranian backed butcher , has been turned into a extremist ISIS VS secular @sshead conflict , by western/non-muslim media? Its an extremely cynical attempt of criminalising aspirations & efforts of syrian muslims and 100s of rebel groups fighting a just war , just because US , Russia and iran r worried abt the whether they can exploit a post @sshead syria.

Your sectarian leaders & those who support them have muslim blood on their hands and u people r the real facilitators & backers of extreme groups such as ISIS and complete destruction of the syrian state.

This is exactly how I see this civil war. ISIS is being used to vilify the legitimate struggle against a secular tyrant.

Dude, stop falling so easily into western traps. Wow, such a coincidence, the only bad guys in the region, are countries who were against the west, such as Iran, Syria, and Libya. Anyone NATO loves, is a Good Muslim.

Open your eyes. Our fight is not against you. Our fight is to defend stability, peace, and a greater Muslim awareness.

.
Only thing I learned is that the isis and moderate beheaders along with their masters saudi arabia and usa is no match to Russia's bombings.

.
Open your eyes. Our fight is not against you. Our fight is to defend stability, peace, and a greater Muslim awareness.

So this is Russia defending peace and Muslim awareness.

AFAIK Russians are not engaging ISIS but anti-Assad groups like FSA.
ISIS is an essential cog in Iran-Assad's designs just like Hammas. ISIS keeps Assad look good along with keeping Iraq in close ambit of Tehran.Hammas provides Iran the leverage against Israel and hence keep a check on her. Khomeni and Co is very smart, too smart for Dumb Arab Kings and so called smart@rs Israelis.
