Karachi: Four Hindu doctors were gunned down today in Pakistan’s southern Sindh province, sparking fears and panic among the minority community.

The doctors were gunned down in their clinic in Chak town close to Shikarpur.

Dr Ramesh Kumar, a former member of provincial assembly and chief patron of Pakistan Hindu Council, confirmed that Dr Ashok, Dr Naresh, Dr Ajeet and Dr Satia Paul were killed by armed assailants while working in their clinic.

Asif Ali Zardari has directed authorities to immediately arrest those responsible and bring them to justice. Reuters

“This is not the first time such an incident has taken place where members of our community have been targeted. What is of concern is that the law enforcement agencies tend to support the criminals involved in such acts,” Dr Kumar told PTI.

“There is a strong population of around 50,000 Hindus in Chak so for such an incident to happen is bad and the government must take notice of it and provide protection to the minorities,” Kumar demanded.

Police said they had arrested two of the people involved in the killings and were searching for the other culprits.

A police official confirmed that the killings could have been the result of a dispute between some Hindus and the local Bhaya Baradari that too place two weeks back over a Hindu girl.

Kumar said minorities were well protected and secure military strongman Pervez Musharraf was the president but now they had become prey to open terrorism and crime.

Condemning the murders, the Pakistan Hindu Council appealed to President Asif Zardari, the Chief Justice of Pakistan and the Army chief to take note of the targeting of Hindus in parts of Sindh.

President Zardari took “serious note” of the attack and directed authorities to immediately arrest those responsible and bring them to justice.

Zardari had sought an immediate report on the incident, presidential spokesman Farhatullah Babar said in Islamabad.

Zardari instructed Ramesh Lal, a Hindu parliamentarian from Sindh, to go to the village and convey his condolences to the bereaved families.

The President said it was the “moral and legal responsibility of the government to protect members of the minority community against vandalism and atrocities”.

Babar quoted Zardari as saying that the “law would take its course and the culprits will not go unpunished”.

Sad man these people are Dr's why kill them? they there to help people

Bring back Mushy i say he made mistakes but he had the country in order he can only save Pakistan

Again they were a part of the ongoing conflict. It is not that they were especially targeted for their religious affiliations and I believe that there is no hatred for Hindus in Pakistan, none whatsoever.

RIP to the dead ... Tragic news really ...

.
Prove it that it was of West Pakistan. Firstly it was 13% & it was population including East Pakistan, most Hindus lived there & were gone when Bangladesh came into being.

I've no intention of rubbing this on Pakistanis face and nor should I do. All I wanted to say is that gunning down of minorities in broad daylight (not in a bomb that exploded in a market or a religious place) must have sent shiver across the entire community.

Just think what would happen if American Christians here start targetting any of us, viz., Muslims, Hindus, Sikhs, Jews? Scary right?

tried looking on Dawn (which is usually first and always happy to report the bad news in Pakistan) but couldnt find this incident

if true --well it obviously goes without saying its a most dispicable act against humanity.

no stone should be left unturned, the culprits must be nabbed and made example out of.......

Feel sorry for the loss of life,
So the main reason of this cruel act was a dispute ....

.
if it were Hindus that carried it out, would some of the indians on here change their song? I think yes

well then it would suddenly become a business dispute or domestic rivalry (forget caste issue)

regardless of their religion -- it was MURDER. Murder is a crime in any country, murderers are criminals. They deserve a 2 x 2 meter jail cell only.

have any extremist type groups claimed a responsibility?

Ok so how do u know that they were killed because of being hindu and not of some dispute over money, property or something else.

Dont fool yourself.

If it was one individual, there wd be chance of other motives like personal enmity or petty crime like killing for ransom. But the number is "four"; naturally the finger moves to.............

Hindu or non-hindu it is your countrymen and it is upon you to protect them.....
