236 dead in Karachi garment factory fire

people reportedly jumped from the top floor, breaking bones in the process. The basement is to be the real danger zone, expect to find much more there.

Another twist into this story on multiple TV channels is that the factory owner was served a notice for 'bhatta' of 1 crore Rs, but the owner only agreed for 10 lac. And then a couple days later, another notice that the 'bhatta khor' got angry, and then things got worse. Then about one hour before the fire, some employees hastily got a short leave from the factory, and reportedly had to argue for the short leave. Seems really fishy. Bhatta Khor, employees leaving, fire spreading so so quickly etc. Doors not opening, the doors jamming, and so much other factors.

let's hope some fair investigations take place.

Truly a devastating incident in our country.

A real Tragedy! RIP the unfortunate victims and may the injured recuperate quickly.

The shame is that in these man-power intensive industries; just to minimise the costs all safety norms are thrown to the winds. People are simply crammed into unsafe premises, and sometimes even kept locked in to maximise productivity. The final indignity will now be to know that the victims were employed on what is known as "a piece-rate basis" which means that they were being paid per piece made, with no recourse or avenue of compensatory benefits under the Workman's Compensation Act.
What a shame.

Kya Zulm hai yaar. When will this country start thinking about safety and per-cautionary methods. Even right now the same rhetoric is being repeated on tv channels. Teen din ka soug, Aik aik lakh moawaza. Kya bakwas hai yaar.

I think it might be due to teh culture of unsafe work enviroment over there, i am sure you will find plenty of such factories around.

There was only one fire exit door in factory of over a thousand employees.

کراچی، متحدہ قومی موومنٹ نے بلدیہ ٹاو¿ن میں فیکٹری میں ہولناک آتشزدگی کے نتیجے میں 200 سے زائد محنت کشوں کی شہادت کے المناک سانحہ پر تین روزہ سوگ کااعلان کیا ہے۔ اس بات کافیصلہ آج رابطہ کمیٹی پاکستان اورلندن کے مشترکہ اجلاس میں کیا گیا۔ اجلاس میں اس المناک واقعہ کوقومی سانحہ قراردیتے ہوئے فیصلہ کیاگیاکہ اس سانحہ کے سوگ میں تین روزتک ایم کیوایم کی تمام سیاسی سرگرمیاں معطل رہیں گی اور پہلے سے طے شدہ تمام تنظیمی پروگرام اورسیاسی اجتماعات ملتوی کردیئے گئے ہیں تاکہ پوری توجہ امدادی سرگرمیوںپرمرکوزرکھی جاسکے۔

اجلاس میں فیصلہ کیاگیا کہ تین روزہ سوگ کے سلسلے میں بلدیہ ٹاو¿ن کراچی اورگزشتہ روز لاہورمیں آتشزدگی کے سانحہ کے شہداءکےلئے قرآن خوانی وفاتحہ خوانی کے اجتماعات منعقدہوں گے،بازو¿وں پرسیاہ پٹیاں باندھی جائیں گی، پارٹی دفاترپرسیاہ پرچم لہرائے جائیں گے ۔رابطہ کمیٹی نے فیصلہ کیاکہ سانحہ میں شہیدہونے والے کراچی سمیت پنجاب، خیبرپختونخوا ، بلوچستان اوراندرون سندھ کے محنت کشوں کی میتیں انکے آبائی شہروں میں پہنچانے کے انتظامات ایم کیوایم کے فلاحی ادارے خدمت خلق فاو¿نڈیشن کی جانب سے کئے جائیں گے۔رابطہ کمیٹی نے تمام ذمہ داروں، کارکنوں اورمنتخب نمائندوں کوہدایت کی کہ وہ سانحہ کے شہداءکی تجہیزوتکفین کے انتظامات میں بھرپور حصہ لیں،لواحقین کاغم بانٹیں۔ رابطہ کمیٹی نے کاروباری حضرات سے بھی اپیل کی کہ وہ اس سانحہ کے سوگ میں اپنی دکانوں اوربازاروں پرسیاہ پرچم لہرائیں اورشہداءکے لواحقین کے غم میں شریک ہوں۔

رابطہ کمیٹی نے صدر آصف زرداری، وزیراعظم راجہ پرویزاشرف، گورنرسندھ ڈاکٹر عشرت العباد اوروزیراعلیٰ سندھ سیدقائم علی شاہ سے مطالبہ کیاکہ اس سانحہ کے متاثرین کیلئے فی الفورمعاوضہ کااعلان کیاجائے۔ سانحہ کی اعلیٰ سطحی تحقیقات کرائی جائیں،فیکٹری مالکان سمیت جوبھی اس سانحہ کے ذمہ دارہوںان کے خلاف سخت ترین کارروائی کی جائے ۔ رابطہ کمیٹی نے گزشتہ روز لاہور میں فیکٹری میں آتشزدگی کے سانحہ میں درجنوں افرادکے شہیدہونے پربھی دلی افسوس کااظہار کرتے ہوئے گورنرپنجاب سردارلطیف کھوسہ اوروزیراعلیٰ پنجاب میاں شہباز شریف سے مطالبہ کیاکہ اس سانحہ کی تحقیقات کرائی جائے اورسانحہ میں جاں بحق ہونے والے افرادکے لواحقین کومعاوضہ دیا جائے۔
