Nitish has a clean image. He almost eliminated serious crime, in once lawless bihar ( during last tenure in alliance with BJP).
Aside from this, he wants the job. There is not much competition unless Modi wants to continue in 2024.
The are no strong contenders from the southern regions either.
You have to remember, even this time, people voted for Modi (not directly for BJP).

In 2024 Modi will be 72 or so. That will be too long for him to continue in active politics at the pace he is going. Yogi/Nitish is our next bet.

Nitish is not a Mass leader. He can't win on his own in Bihar. I am not sure how a person who can not even his own state can have a pan national appeal! In fact I bet Yogi has more mass appeal in Bihar than Nitish.

To add to Nitish not being a mass leader, he is no spring chicken either. His age is same as Modi's.

This is all moot. BJP will never ever agree to nitish being anywhere near Central govt.
