Defending champions Kolkata Knight Riders take on perennial chokers Delhi Daredevils in the first match of the 2013 Pepsi Indian Premier League (IPL) at the Eden Gardens.
It promises to be a pulsating contest as the vociferous crowd would back the home side against a team full of impact players.
Kolkata have a very balanced side and the presence of numerous all-rouners gives them tremendous depth. Multi-dimenstional players such as Jacques Kallis, Ryan ten Doeschate, Ryan McLaren, Rajat Bhatia, Laxmi Ratan Shukla and Shakib Al Hasan give them many options in both departments. Shakibs availability is under a bit of a cloud as he has just recovered from an injury and national duty may keep him away for a considerable time.
Delhis build-up to the IPL has been dented by the injuries to Kevin Pietersen and his withdrawal was a huge blow and Ryder was expected to take over, but the horrific incident has ruled him out. Nevertheless, Delhi still remain formidable given the power-players in the line-up. David Warner and Virender Sehwag would lead their charge upfront and it is one of the most feared partnerships in the IPL. Mahela Jayawardene will then add to the line-up with his serenity. But Sehwag's back injury may keep him out of action from the opening tie.
