ISLAMABAD: A total of 1,224 people were killed and 2,157 more injured in 52 suicide attacks across Pakistan since January, making 2010 one of the bloodiest years since the turn of the century.

Though the total number of suicide bombings decreased 35 per cent this year as against the past year, 2010 was the bloodiest year since 2001 in terms of the number of the people killed in such attacks, The News daily reported today.

Pakistan witnessed 80 suicide attacks in 2009 that killed 1,217 people and injured 2,305 others.

On an average, suicide bombers killed 102 persons a month this year, compared to last year's average of 101 killings a month.

The bombers, on an average, killed more than 23 Pakistanis every week and over three persons every day in 2010.

Over four suicide attacks were carried out every month this year, compared to six assaults every month in 2009.

Civilian casualties accounted for 49 per cent of the total deaths caused by suicide bombings this year.

The remainder were personnel from security forces and law enforcement agencies, including the police, military, Frontier Constabulary, Pakistan Rangers, Inter-Services Intelligence and Khasadar militia.

Twelve per cent of casualties were Shias, eight per cent were Ahmedis and six per cent were Barelvi Muslims.

The largest number of deaths in suicide attacks - 416 - was reported in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa province.

Critical point would be when US leaves the place.
Would all this calm down, rise up, presidency rule or Taliban rise again.
No one can perdict.
But there would be a change for sure.

no doubt when american leave the afghan than every thing will become normal, Normal mean the rise of taliban and decrease in suicide attack in pakistan bcoz then ISI will be free to do any thing....you can understand they have lot of pressure at this time....

Very encouraging to see a 35% reduction in the number of attacks. That is essentially the indicator which determines how capable terrorists are of mounting repeat attacks. The other encouraging trend is the decrease in reach, which is not highlighted by this article. 2009 had more attacks outside of the main theatre of operations (FATA) than 2010. If you then compare the 4 quarters of 2010 and look at numbers, the trend becomes even more clear.

All of this is positive and points to a severe degradation of terrorist capability achieved through the actions of the Pakistan Armed Forces.

TL though there has been a reduction in the number of the attacks , the number of victims have gone up which may indicate the terrorists adopting more sophisticated methods, higher grade explosives etc. which is dangerous.

But one thing I agree is the reduction in reach. In 2009 IIRC there were many bombings in Pakistan proper - Lahore, Isloo, Rawalpindi etc.

The total number of persons killed in KP (416 civvies + about 1050 Sec forces) is a testament to it.

Karthic, no actually the number of people who died is higher because the terrorists chose to attack soft targets this year as the difficult to reach targets are now basically beyond their capabilities. 2009 saw attacks on major government and security offices. 2010 saw attacks on groups of civilians, jirgas and so on. This is completely consistent with the limited reach.

The FATA ops have broken their back. No question. But I am not happy to see the ToI spin it the way they have.

What spin they have put as I am not aware of the ground realities ?

In the same time about 10,000 people have been killed in violence in cartel related violence in Mexico, shows that the sacrifices made by the security forces, in controlling this menace is bearing fruit.:)

In this case its going to get worse before it gets better.

I reckon the violence wil be like this till 2012. And we want to know why, its cos of the projects in Islamabad and Karachi and have began construction to help Pakistan's Future, once they are built the World as well as Pakistan will PROPELY defend themseleves from Terrorism.

I thought 2009 was the bloodiest year in terms of terrorism. A lot more carnage was wrecked through suicide bombing last year than this year. May god protect us all next year and years after regardless of our faith, race, color and ethnicity and the hardships we've endured this year become shadows of past. Ameen.

ifs and buts are too much here..without any proper and long term planning nothing can be achieved. you guys need to understand that after only a single mumbai like incident have dented our economy badly.. so u can think about the impact of having mumbai like incident in pakistan on daily basis.... for a profitable and sustainable business u like to have a secure, politically and economically stable pakistan... i don't want to have business with a society which is having a lot of volatility on economic variable.. because at the end we want to have a secure and stable supply... the risk variable needs to come down heavily...

Actually 2010 has been better in terms of number of suicide attacks. Just recall around this time last year (from roughly October 2009 - January 2010). We were having terrorist attacks roughly every 2 or 3 days. This has changed significantly this year. Obviously more needs to be done, but the offensives in FATA have dealt a huge blow to the likes of TTP and their friends, and hopefully going into 2011 we have even less (if any) terrorist attacks.
