A 20-YEAR-OLD Dalit man was allegedly chased and beaten to death in Pimple Saudagar suburb of Pune, reportedly over an inter-caste relationship with a woman belonging to an “upper caste”. Police have arrested four family members of the woman and detained two minors, all of whom have been booked for murder and under provisions of the Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe (Prevention of Atrocities) Act.

The incident took place on the night of June 7. The deceased was identified as Viraj Vilas Jagtap. Police identified the four arrested persons as the girl’s father, Jagdish Kate, brother Sagar, uncle Kailas and cousin Hemant. Two minors from the family have also been detained. An FIR in the case was lodged by Viraj’s uncle, Jitesh Jagtap.

According to police, the girl’s family members have accused Viraj of stalking and harassing her and that the fight took place over the “trouble he was causing to the girl”. The Jagtap family is from the Dalit community.

Police said Viraj was a second-year student in the Arts stream at a local college and was working part time in a transport business.

According to the FIR, Viraj, who was on his bike, was initially chased by six persons in a tempo. They hit his bike from behind after which he fell down and started running. After chasing him further, one of the accused hit him on the head with a heavy metal rod and another threw a rock at him. Four of the accused held his hands and legs while Jagdish used casteist slurs against him and spat at him for being in a relationship with his daughter, the FIR states.

Speaking to The Indian Express, Jitesh said, “On the night of the attack, Viraj got a call between 9 pm and 9.30 pm. He left home on his bike. Sometime later, my other nephew got a call on his mobile phone that Viraj had been in a fight in Pimple Saudagar. We went to the spot and found him lying there with injuries on the head and other parts of the body. He was still conscious, so we rushed him to a hospital and, in the meantime, Viraj told me what had happened,” adding that he succumbed to his injuries.

Jitesh further said, “We want police to investigate the matter without being biased and ensure that the accused get maximum punishment. Viraj is survived by his mother. He lost his father when he was only one year old.”

Pimpri-Chinchwad Police Commissioner Sandeep Bishnoi said a further probe was on. Inspector Ajay Bhosale, Sangvi police station, said, “The accused have been booked for murder, unlawful assembly and also under relevant sections of SC/ST Act. They have alleged that Viraj was stalking and harassing the girl and had been warned before. On the night of the incident, they had an argument followed by a fight. We will also speak to the girl to know her side of things.”

@Novice09, I will reply to your reply to me about a similar topic later but only yesterday you thought pro-Dalit Reservation system should be abolished. @Soumitra thanked that post.

In South Asia sadly, the relations between a man and woman brings the involvement of the families and that leads to murders such as this. A manifestation of honor killing.

What do you want me to do about it?
Don't be a "sleepy Joe." This is quite serious. 6 people chased one motorcycle fella in their tempo right n the streets of Pune which is supposed to be a fairly cosmopolitan city in India. Then they killed him over intercaste love.

The image of India travels abroad with such stories giving the impression of an intolerant backwards hole.

Pune is well-known to all White people due to Osho ashram.

When will Indians stop being so junglee feudalistic murder sanctioning? When will India join the civilized order of nations? 6 people chasing a biker in a tempo leads to immediate police involvement in a civilized country, and those 6 people are arrested for public nuisance. But not in India where caste and honour rules.

. .
Honour crime.

Western socio-economic ratings and human rights agencies should be picking up on these and downgrading India's status from "world's largest democracy" to "world's largest tragicomedy".

...The tragedy is what India is. The comedy is what Indians think India is.
Aren't honour crimes common in Pakistan as well? You're telling me that biker-lovers don't get chased by the relatives of the girl in a tempo, later to be killed by swords?

I am only asking this, as I'm not 100 percent sure about Pakistan. Maybe in rural areas? But it's definitely a public nuisance and those in the tempo should be punished first.

This is sad.

Another day in Hindurashtra.

I still don't see what I'm supposed to do about this.

It is not that anyone thinks I don't detest the caste warfare that exists or that I haven't spoken out about it. To tag me on this is downright stupid.

On the other hand, you are good to go. Your last paragraph says all that it should.

@Pakistani Fighter

For the sake of economy, in future, please tag our own Baby Trump alone. He will provide the right sound bytes.

We know you can't do anything.
Because we know you wouldn't even condemn it.

India is cesspool of bigots, terrorists, racists, evil people.

To be fair, Sleepy Joe is our resident Indian apologist on Defence.pk. He certainly condemns all the wrongdoings of Indian society that's why I tagged him.

But there aren't too many others, unfortunately.

Why should I condemn an Indian atrocity in a Pakistani defence forum? And who are you to hand out certificates? You have lackeys who will join you in beating their breasts and making a public outcry, with absolutely no intention of doing anything at all about the situation. You will get more than enough of what you so obviously crave from them.

We can not justify a wrong by other... a wrong is a wrong... be it horror killing or caste based reservation in CURRENT FORM...

Tell me who deserve THE ADMISSION/JOB:

1. A village boy who studied in village... government school... helped his father in fields... scored 75%... but cut-off was 90% for non-reserved...
2. Son of an IPS... studied in DPS RK Puram... tutions... scored 54%... cut-off for SC-ST 50%...
3. Daughter of the SAME IPS... studied in DPS RK Puram... tutions... scored 91%... but moved to general category after making into cutoff without RESERVATION... thus, occupying one seat of unreserved category person...

This is the reason why I hate RESERVATION... A deserving candidate should not lose because of something is RESERVED for undeserving... Great example is our education system... a teacher who cannot write A for APPLE properly is selected as GOVERNMENT TEACHER - ENGLISH... thank you RESERVATION... next generation is much more UNEDUCATED...
