Twenty Bangladeshis, who were held in different Tanzanian jails for months, arrived in Bangladesh early Friday with the help of MGH Group.

They reached at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in the capital by a Turkish Airlines at around 5:00am.

Mohosin Chowdhury, director welfare, Bureau of Manpower Employment and Training (BMET), told The Daily Star that they were going to South Africa through middlemen without legal papers several months ago.

Tanzanian police raided and arrested them at a camp in Tanzania, he added.

Meanwhile, guardian of one of the returnees, Jahinur Rahman, contacted with the BMET asking it to help in release of Jahinur from jail.

Later, the BMET with the help of Bangladesh Embassy at Kenya rescued these 20 people, said Mohosin.

Besides, one of their companions — Nurul Haque of Brahmanbaria — died out of starvation while Tanzanian police were taking them to jail, Jahinur told The Daily Star at the airport.

Santosh Kumar Adhikary, joint secretary of Ministry of Expatriate Welfare and Overseas Employment, said the ministry has already initiated an investigation into the matter and found three travel agencies responsible for sending these people to Tanzania illegally.

Following media reports, MGH Group had communicated to the government to bring them home and offered their assistance.
