2.75 Million Olive Trees Planted in Pakistan.

My big thumbs up for Pakistan. Guys, focus on bamboo plantation. It has the solution of many problems faced by sub continent countries. I had extensively written on the subject on other forums.
I would like to read your research on the subject.

Plantation is a very very interesting subject.

One can grow 30 times denser jungle than original jungle which will grow as big as a 100 year old jungle in just 10 years. It can give you abundance of oxygen. Once grown, it will require watering for just 2 years. Subsequently, no water, fertilizers or insecticides will be required. It will be like a green wall very high with multi layer plants in 4 to 7 layers depending upon the height of the plants divided into canopy trees, sub canopy trees, bushes, Creepers etc. I am planning to grow timber trees using this method on one of the land I am negotiating now.

The jungle grows so dense in a short span that it is difficult for peoe to believe. Look at some photos of Miyawaki jungle of one year or less.

Bamboo is a miracle plant and source of lots of issues faced by man kinds such as pollution, housing problems, energy issues., medicines etc. Let there be any problems faced by human beings. The solution lies in bamboo plantation. Here are some of interesting usage of bamboos.

Here is something I had written in my article of growing India rapidly and making India a country less dependent on any sort of import. In that article, I had posted my thoughts on bamboo economy. It is more applicable to Pakistan than it is applicable to india.

Now, my most important suggestion for reducing oil imports is coming up. It is to go for biofuel in a big way. Now there are plants which can produce methanol from bio waste at a cost around rupees 25 a letter after adjustment of calorific value which is 80% of the petrol, the price of 1 litre petrol equivalent methanol will be rupees 30.

Like Nitin Gadkari had said it once, India should go for many small bio fuel plants located in every corner of the country. We are putting up refineres at a cost of thousands of crore. However, if this money is spend in small bio fuel plants in numbers, it can change our energy availability scenario. Remote places will no longer be dependent on petrol and diesel supplied in tanker. They will have their own source of petrol diesel alternative at a cost of less than half compared to What they have to spend on petrol or diesel. This will enrich farmers as well. Government should put one such plant in each and every district of India to encourage methanol or biodiesel production locally in villages.

The most important aspect is to go for bamboo plantation in Mega scale. One acre of bamboo plantation can produce 40 to 50 tons Bamboo every year on an average by which we can produce 12000 liters of methanol which after the calorific value adjustment is equal to 10,000 liters of petrol in energy. If we go for or a large scale bamboo plantation and produce methanol , we can cut short crude oil import by more than 60 barrels per acre of bamboo plantation. This will cut short crude oil import bill 2500 US dollars per acre of bamboo plantation. If one half of the savings is transfer to farmers , they can prosper and the money goes into the hands of farmer will increase there purchasing power which will lead to demand of goods and services in India. As a result, there will be a demand pull growth in GDP. Government will require less amount of subsidy to help farmers which can alternatively be used for other purpose. If we are able to cut short import of crude oil by half, and transfer that money in agriculture sector, tens of millions of lives will change. It will be a game changer in poverty elimination as well. The other big advantage will be that it will make us a big trade surplus country which will be self sufficient in energy sector and not dependent on remittances to bridge the gap of trade deficit. Our currency will strengthen and it will help us to achieve a goal of 10 Bn + USD economy in coming 10 years.

Now let me disclose the most wonderful aspect of bamboo plantation. It need to be planted only once in many decades. If it is grown in big way for fuel production , it can finish off all pollution from atmosphere. There is no other plant as capable as bamboo to reduce pollution. Government should plant hundreds of bamboo jungles in cities. It can be grown in 100 Sq land to virtually any big area. You will be effectively be able to fight against atmospheric pollution.

More over, bamboo is an excellent construction material. Many beautiful houses can be made with unparalleled esthetical beauty with bamboo. Just plant bamboos in one acre and it will give you the construction material 10 medium size houses every year. Government solve the housing problem with bamboo. Houses having 20 to 25 years of life can be easily be made of bamboo. In Bali, people have made multi story buildings from bamboo.

As part of a tree planting campaign, 120,000 olive trees are being planted in Pakistan’s Balochistan province.

Half of the new saplings to be planted were grown in nurseries on-site while the rest were imported from Italy. The olive plantation will cover a total area of 14,000 acres (5,665 hectares) in Balochistan, Pakistan’s largest province in terms of area, which is located in the south-west of the country.

The recent olive tree planting drive is part of a campaign launched by the Pakistan Agriculture and Research Council (PARC), an agricultural research organization based in the capital Islamabad.

The project is part of ongoing efforts to transform barren land into cultivable plots and promote the province’s agricultural sector while introducing alternative crops for local farmers. There are also plans to build a new olive oil mill in the provincial capital Quetta.

Meanwhile, in Pakistan’s northernmost region, the government of Gilgit-Baltistan has announced plans to plant three million olive trees within a period of three months as part of an environmental conservation project. Parts of this region have experienced deforestation and negative environmental effects like soil erosion, landslides and flash flooding. Under the supervision of the forest and wildlife department, students of local schools and colleges are being encouraged to participate in the drive by planting olive trees.

Pakistan is not a traditional olive-producing country but a wild subspecies of the olive tree called olea cuspidata does grow in different parts of the country. Since 1986 olive trees have been planted experimentally, starting with a project funded by the Italian government. Another government project to plant over five million olive plants was unsuccessful when only one percent of the saplings survived. However subsequent planting drives have borne fruit.

Similar projects implemented in several provinces throughout the country aim to promote olive cultivation and increase the production of edible oils. They have included training programs for local farmers in olive cultivation, processing and pest control, and the setting up of oil extraction mills.

The Pothwar region in the northeastern corner of the country is being developed into an “olive valley” after being identified as a region suitable for olive cultivation because of its topography and climate. Under a current five-year project running until 2020 and also managed by PARC, 2.4 million olive trees are being planted there as a cash crop.

Olive oil is already produced in Pakistan along with a number of other products for sale on the domestic market like olive jam, chutney, pickles and olive-derived products like olive syrup, olive vinegar, olive sweets and olive tea.

these plants require years to grow and give fruits so it seems they were being planted from past many years if they are ready now,italy has great weather and grow almost all types of fruits in single area so we should benefit from their experience in this regard

This is one of the most stupid things and represents the short sighted nature of planners.

Instead of focusing on what is native to this climate and land, and can be processed as value add product,
they are focusing on olive oil.

The world has enough olive oil and the only reason it is expensive in pakistan is due to tax.

Sir G, according to my knowledge olive is since long in Pakistan but only 'male' variety and locally know as 'Kahho'. Even there is a place near Rawalpindi/Islamabad know as 'Barah-Kahho'. There are great number of trees male olive variety in that area and that's why that area was named.
Olive oil is costlier all over the world, here in ME, corn/sunflower/canola costs around Pak Rs 400/= per litre as compared to olive oil priced at 900/= per litre. Further it has health and medicinal values.
Good for Pakistan's economy, to plant it aggressively and start exporting.
The amazing thing is after plantation you have to wait 3 years for first harvesting. Under optimal look after/conditions, generations could enjoy the financial benefits from olive plantation at average for 500 years, olive trees could live up to more than 1000 years.

We have our share of incompetent bureaucrats, but somewhere someone was awake and we started down this path of olive plantation decade and change ago and last year figures showed our olive plantation was approaching 50,000 acres. Once we cross 200,000 mark we will become net exporter of olive.

We started (our personal lands) with I think 100 odd trees, they start bearing fruit second year, may be third year and sustainable growth is achieved in year 5. We have now crossed 100 acres / we started off with 175 plants per acre and plan to take it up to 300 per acre. We wont be extracting oil, rather we will be processing them for eating. We already have steady order inline. It is a very profitable business.

Italians and Spanish have helped us significantly, a good portion of their land shares the same features as ours. We have Ascolana, Manzallina and Pendolino on our land, but companies are introducing many other varieties.

Harvesting is being done primarily in Punjab central, south and potohar, KPK. Sind somewhat but due to problems with the political setup there not much, Baluchistan I don't know why?

Olive is a hardy plant it can survive heat like ours, and continues to produce fruit from 500 to 1500 years depending if the plant survives people/accidents. a 1500 years old olive plant was destroyed by trophy hunters. Its roots are real deep so it can survive drought and is best suited for Arid environment like ours.

Now something on Agriculture we have already sold two harvests of Shisham tree as commercial tree raising project. Now we are experimenting with about 2000 Teak trees from India/Indonesia/myanmar tissue cultured, few hundred pistachio trees, almond trees, Sandal wood both white and red, Ajwa dates and Mabroom dates, Papaya, pineapple and my better half's favorite cardamom or green elaichi. I am experimenting with vertical farming and artificial rain forest environment for decoration plants.

Even at times I am surprised what little education and internet is doing for our agricultural sector, I implore you not to give negative comments unless you are aware about what is happening in the agricultural sector in Pakistan. People are experimenting like crazy Teak, Sandalwood, Elaichi, Almond, Cashew, Pistachio, Anna apple, date plants, papaya, pineapple, sugar apple, lychee, hybrid guava and lot of other hybrid varieties.

In the true sense drip irrigation in Pakistan is still years away due to overhead costs but in the crude sense many people are doing it to conserve water, make produce efficient, cost effective and high yield per acre. We being one of them and engineering degrees of all my brothers, father and I are paying huge dividends towards this goal.

So rest assured we are improving in the agri sector, not leaps and bounds but we are an extremely adaptable country/nation our perseverance and survival skills are second to none. You'll see in a decade or so we will be net exporters in agri products.

BTW: Punjab Govt has recently announced 50% subsidy on installation of solar energy, Inshallah we will get there.

I had opened one thread on an another forum on "Rural development model' and "How to make India grow rapidly". In those threads, I had discussed many very very important measures to make India grow rapidly. You can start one such forum to discuss the measures to develop Pakistan rapidly. I will contribute a lot there.

Actually, Olive is not entirely foreign. Just to give an example from a place almost all of us have visited, if you leave for Muree from Islamabad then as soon as you leave Islamabad, the bushes on the hills on side of the roads are all olive. Wild olive that never gave fruit. When the projected started some year back it started with grafting of those wild olive plants. The results and production was so good that they decided to work on species that is suitable for Pakistan. Now we have multiple species which are all giving excellent results. Add in value addition/end product processes and you have a high potential industry/product.

A good friend of mine working in LDA these days initiated and managed such plantation project in Lahore-Liberty Market with excellent results. With just six moths or so gone, the area already have started looking different.

Although the question was for another person, but many techniques and ideas on the subject were discussed in the threads started by @Dubious

From what I gathered last, there were over 300,000 wild olive trees in KPK alone which just needed grafting of a high yield plant. Interestingly when olive plantation was in an off take position Bilour the then Railway minister made sure maximum of those lands were leased out to his family at peanuts prices.:o:

Yes,
Miyawaki is excellent but costly. I have a scale down cost effective version of Miyawaki which may produce 80 pc result of Miyawaki. We have the methods where few kilograms of bio mass may produce result of a truckload of biomass. This method is generally used for making jungle but my plan is to make fruit forest using tweaked Miyawaki for the purpose.
