The Indian Navy successfully conducted maiden firing of an AntiShip missile from first of Kalvari class submarines, during test firing in the Arabian Sea on Thursday. The missile has successfully hit a surface target at extended ranges during the trial firing which was held on Thursday morning.

According to a tweet by SpokespersonNavy, the project 75 Submarine Kalvari successfully launched underwater missile and engaged the surface target.

As per the details released by the Indian Navy, this missile launch is a significant milestone for the Kalvari, which is the first in a series of Scorpene class submarine being built in India.

The Ministry of Defence also lauded the achievement and said, “This missile launch is a significant milestone, not only for the Kalvari, which is the first in a series of Scorpene class submarines being built in India, but also in enhancing the Indian Navy’s sub-surface warfare capability.”

Prime Minister Narendra Modi also congratulated the country’s defence scientists for successfully testing the missile, saying it was a proud moment for the entire nation.

The missle provide the submarine the ability to neutralise surface threats at extended ranges.

Kalvari, which is the first of the Indian Navy’s Scorpene class stealth submarines being built under the Project 75, is currently undergoing extensive sea trials and will soon be inducted into the Indian Navy. Reportedly, the submarines are being built by Mazagon Dock Limited (MDL) in collaboration with France’s DCNS.

On Wednesday, Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) had successfully test-fired an indigenously developed supersonic Interceptor Missile from Abdul Kalam Island off Odisha coast.

Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar congratulated DRDO on the successful launch of the interceptor missile.
Chairman DRDO and Secretary Department of Defence R&D Dr S Christopher also congratulated team AAD for the successful test firing.

The endo-atmospheric missile, capable of intercepting incoming targets at an altitude of 15 to 25 kms successfully destroyed the incoming missile. All the mission objectives were successfully met.
