18 MiGs lost since 2005, says Antony

The case of Mig-21 with IAF it is quite bad cause during the last 3 to 5 years majority of the time the Mig-21's were grounded for one reason or another & still the outcome is such losses.

At one time the Russians were claiming that the HAL was producing sub-standard parts for the Mig21's and that was the main cause of accidents.

I realise that somebody tried to compare the Mirage III of Pakistan, I think one must not forget that since 1994 PAF was under nuclear related sanctions & to maintain it's obsolete fleet of Mirages they had to cannibalize scrap fighter planes bought from Australia (in fact they had even protested on Pakistan being able to fly their scrappred fighter planes sold a salvage), Lebanon, Libya, etc. .. , while IAF had no sanctions and was 100% doing manufacturer supported upgrades & additions to their fleet of Mig21 including the Bisons !

Very rightly put..

Perhaps we shouldn’t also forget the worst sanctions that our F-16 fleet faced. Against heavy odds, the fleet was never grounded once or stopped operational flying. The conversion courses, ops exercises, ADAs (day+night), deployments and usual training continued and despite all odds, and they still managed 100,000 accident-free flight hours in 2005 which is a record in itself…Speaks volume for the maintenance guys and the operators…

The last PAF viper to go down was tail # 82701 ( see the attached pic, its the one closer in pic) on 22 Oct, 1994. It suffered bird hit just after take off, the engine seized and pilot ejected safely…
