QUETTA: Pakistani security forces have nabbed 170 suspects in their operations across the city, BBC News reported.

These operations were carried out as part of the government’s response to the growing demands of dealing with terrorists who masterminded Saturday’s deadly bombing that killed 89 people.

Earlier, AFP reported that security forces on Tuesday killed four men and arrested seven others accused of killing Shia Muslims, including a purported mastermind of a devastating bomb attack that killed 89 people, officials said.

The operation was carried out on the outskirts of Quetta, where thousands of Shias are demanding army protection and refusing to bury the victims of Saturday’s bomb attack on their ethnic Hazara community.

Balochistan home secretary Akbar Hussain Durrani, and Colonel Maqbool Ahmed from the paramilitary Frontier Corps said the killings and arrests took place during what they called an “ongoing operation”.

“Those who were killed were high-profile targeted killers. They were involved in the killing of a Shia judge and senior police officers,” Durrani told AFP.

One of the masterminds of Saturday’s bombing in the Quetta suburb of Hazara Town, was amongst those in custody, Durrani added.

Intelligence and paramilitary officers also confiscated bomb-making material, weapons, suicide vests and ammunition during the operation, officials said.

The arrests came just hours before Pakistani cabinet ministers were due to arrive in Quetta in an attempt to negotiate an end to the Shia protest.

Thousands of women, men and children have blocked a road in Quetta, refusing to end their sit-in and bury their dead until the authorities take action against the extremists behind Saturday’s attack.

Is it, deir aye drust aye? or is it, police always knew where this scum was but certain vested interest kept them from taking action against this scum?

I mean why couldn't this action be taken before,? why did it have to come to innocent blood spilled in hundreds before these jerks gave police a go to take action against this vile pieces of ****?

Half of Pakistan's population could be arrested and it still wouldn't make one iota of difference. The problems in our society run far deeper. Pakistan as a nation is at a crossroads. A significant part of the population has fallen in line behind a religious cause that few actually understand. The armed forces, while having not done enough over the last decade, find themselves cornered by the very populous they have sworn to protect.

These massacres will not stop, until the infrastructural development of Pakistan catches up to the most basic needs of the people. Otherwise, the poor and desperate will continue to be easy prey for ideologies that promise relief in the afterlife or at least a greater cause to work towards. The failure of successive Pakistani governments in addressing the failing schooling system has left a vacuum. One which extremists are only too happy to fill. By leaving the young masses to be indoctrinated by those who have no interest in a successful Pakistan, we have placed the future of this nation in their hands.

If Pakistan is to have any future. Forget prosperity and happiness. If we are to have even a diminished existence moving forward, we have to put in the effort at the grass roots level. If we are to eliminate ethnic tension, we must teach children to respect those who are different from them. If we are to eliminate suicide bombings, we must show children that they can legitimately become doctors, lawyers, and can pull their families out of poverty. We must show the vast majority of the poor rural masses that there is something better to live for, and some reward for an honest day's work. When Pakistanis die daily without having gained even the basics of healthcare, how can we convince them that their nation cares about them? The reality is we have failed the people miserably and now they are turning to the only other available option. A life governed by extremist thought. The onus is still on the Pakistan government, military or civilian, to reverse course and invest heavily in the parts of the nation neglected since independence. There is a Pakistan outside the urban centers. There is more to Pakistan than Karachi or Lahore or Peshawar. And it is there that we have lost and it is where a generation of alienated Pakistanis have been indoctrinated to destroy their very own nation in the pursuit of misguided ideals.

Give a man shelter. Give him opportunities to succeed. Give him a chance to live and survive. Give him the ability to make a life for himself and watch how these very same extremist are thrown out of the nation. Without the ability to reason and without the ability to survive even the most basic diseases, Pakistanis are no more than zombies existing to do the bidding of the likes of the TTP. The choice is ours, whether this status quo is good enough. Or do we require a better and more inclusive future for all Pakistanis. In the end, we will all fail together and succeed together.

170 suspects??? more than half will be released as most are arrested by hearsay, finger pointing and being family members.

Often a lot of innocent people are arrested too. But I believe serious action against Jhangvi is a must now. They did some encounters. I believe they killed those guys on purpose before they could be freed by the courts. It was a strategy. I don't know if I should say that strategy was incorrect or not. LEJ and TTP have done some massive damage to the nation and even there is a vengeful person in everyone. I do not like innocents being arrested and have raised my voice against it very many times but these killings need to be stopped and now we are at the stage-anything works.

In this case Asma Jehangir shall take notice!

The government knows very well that LeJ and SSP are terrorist outfits yet no action has been taken until sh!t hit the fan!

170 suspects?? hope they got the real ones in them. And God help their families.

.
it is said that the mastermind of the terrorist attack is in police custody as well.....

i hope examples are made out of the scum who perpetrated this act against our citizens.

according to my sources, there are very large protests and demonstrations being held in Isloo/Pindi, Lahore, Karachi, Peshawar and Quetta. Many airports and businesses are shut down today to show solidarity with the victims and to condemn the barbaric act.

.
Now wait for Baloch tribes staging anti Pakistan protests for 'le missing persons'....and one eyed Cheif Justice demonizing Army and ISI for the arrests.
We as a country are well and truely messed up

Get a life. These are not 'missing persons'. They are arrested by police and their kin know where they are. Unlike cases where even Habeas Corpus won't help.
