A group of 17 Chinese nationals including six females were arrested yesterday for alleged bank fraud, police said today.

They said the group is alleged to have withdrawn an estimated US$ 2 million from private bank accounts and credit card holders in China after hacking into the computer system.

The group was arrested following joint investigations by the International Police (INTERPOL) and the local Criminal Investigation Department (CID).

The group was arrested from a safe at Rajagiriya, police added.

17 Chinese arrested in bank scam

What a shameful bunch of criminals.

Apologies to Sri Lanka for any trouble these criminals might have caused.

Good work by INTERPOL and the Sri Lankan police to catch these high level fraudsters looks like quite a sophisticated operation.

Swift justice should be meted out to every individual found guilty.

Sophisticated!

Can anyone tell what banking regulations are followed in Sri Lanka for preventing cyber attacks on banks?

Sri Lanka beware.....this is just he tip of the iceberg.....more of thesefilty ungreatful animals will try to destroy your beautiful island.....

thats not much bad and shamefull as india has done in Srilanka.....

Is that why they keep getting killed in Australia?

Oh wait... that is the indians.

Why are you getting your panties in a twist? Are you a credit card scammer too? And fyi Chinese students are worse off than Indians students here, 1 out 4 have been bashed/robbed in Australia.

Pathetic attempt at point scoring over someone's death

You were talking about having loads of Chinese "pests" in Australia.

But everyone knows that it's the indians who are targeted and killed in Australia. That shows what they think of you.

As usual, the Indian perception of reality is the exact opposite of what actually happens. Something that happened again just recently when the BBC Country rating polls came out.

I was talking about credit card scammers. Take your but*hurt somewhere else thanks.

I can start posting about Chinese student deaths in Australia too, but then again am not a scum.

Nice try, but it was easy to see what you meant.

Here is the thread title: "17 Chinese nationals arrested in Sri Lanka."

And here is your post:

Thieving bastards. We have a horde of these pests here in Oz running these credit card frauds.

You obviously did not mean "credit card scammers" because that does not fit correctly into the sentence at all. Credit card scammers doing credit card frauds, oh really?

Sri Lanka China Joint investigation

The Criminal Investigations Department, after a joint investigation with a special police team from China, arrested 17 Chinese nationals on Wednesday for operating an extortion racket from Colombo using the internet, police said.

Superintendent of Police Ajith Rohana said all 17 suspects were handed over to the Controller General of Immigration and Emigration yesterday morning for deportation to China.

Once the Chinese Embassy provided his Department the required air tickets he hoped to have them deported to China next Monday.

In the interim, he said they were detained at the Department’s detention centre situated in the compound of the Mirihana police station.

According to the police spokesmanm Superintendent Rohana, the gang had operated in other countries as well but they had decamped before detection. In Sri Lanka they had rented out a plush residence close to Royal Park, Rajagiriya and had been operating foe several months.

Their modus operandi had been to send threatening e-mails to wealthy Chinese in the mainland along with their bank account numbers for them to deposit protection money.

In the short period they had been operating from Colombo, the police spokesman said, they had extorted about US$2 million from their Chinese victims. It had been a perfect white collar crime till the CID pounced on them.

Superintendent Rohana said Chinese police were waiting to arrest them once they landed in China.

Asked whether any of them were armed, he said not a single weapon was in their possession.
