ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Imran Khan on Thursday announced the establishment of 15 national parks in all the federating units under the ‘Protected Area Initiative’, ARY News reported.

Addressing the launching ceremony held in Islamabad on Thursday, Imran Khan said guidelines will be given to the provinces to preserve these national parks.

“This is a major initiative for our future generations,” he said and added that the initiative will create job opportunities for people across all provinces, especially the youth.

The prime minister pointed out that global warming and climate change pose a serious threat to Pakistan. “The PTI government launched ten billion tree tsunami program to counter this global warming and climate change threat. Protecting green areas and parks will also help in this endeavour.”

He directed the provinces to take the threat seriously and undertake the requisite steps for the protection of green areas.

PM Imran Khan stressed for developing master plans for the cities and making protection of green area basic component of town planning.

He called on his aide Ameen Aslam to study the way national parks were preserved and maintained in the US and implement the same in Pakistan.

Protected Area Initiative

Under the scheme, called Protected Area Initiative, a national park will be made in each province.

Under the initiative, the coverage of the protected area in the country will be enhanced to 15 percent of the country’s land area from the current 13 percent.

Out of these, 9 are new and recently declared National Parks while 6 others were notified, but never protected. All parks will be made fully functional National Parks for the first time, with proper ecological management and governance.

In the initial phase, almost 5000 direct nature jobs will be generated for the youth.

A step in the right direction. We should try to protect as much of our nature as possible.

We should make smarter use of our urban and agricultural lands so we can fit more people in comfortably and we can grow more from the same land.

This is a good news. At the same time, we must focus on forest cover and urban sprawl which leads to illegal cutting of trees. Urban forests are the way to go, set up multiple in each major city. Lahore is an example. But not only that, establish parks in the city centers and business districts like central park in NYC. This has the highest possibility of killing two birds with one stone

1. prevent any illegal construction or slum dwellings
2. Reserve the area for further projects

Vertical cities and no need of family planning. Our country is running because of remittances from people working in other countries. If given a chance, 99% of people will leave Pakistan for better opportunity.
