Assalam alaikum

yar hum nay to taraqqi nahi daikhi might our next generations see it , the money coming from selling reco diq wil go in these corrupt's pockets and no project will be started also
and they might sell them all under 50 billion and not 150 bil

I see posts here where it is assumed that Pakistan has infinite resources and people in power are absolutely stupid whereas we know better. It is said that little knowledge is the most dangerous thing and it is naïve in the extreme to assume that everyone else is incompetent.

Firstly how do we know that ecological cost of constructing such a large dam would not be far more that benefits it will bring?

How are we going to finance such a huge project?

With our current relations with the US (we never tire of blaming every ill on the US conspiracy with zealous anchors such as Zaid Hamid openly advocating to take US on in a fire fight) neither World Bank nor any Western nation is going to finance this project. Oh yes I forgot, Pakistan has $97-billion in Swiss banks, why don’t we use this hoard?

Kala Bagh Dam is far easier to build and probably within our capability but half the members of this forum would oppose it on political grounds.

Friends and fellow compatriots, we are having problems to finance Bhasha Dam and it will probably be delayed. Our current account deficit last month was about $3-billion in one month! Implying that our reserve of 16- odd billion dollars is barely sufficient to finance about 3-4 months of imports; but we question the rationale behind abandoning a $50-billion project.

Sincerely hope that our nation grows up and aim for realistically achievable targets. Any country which ignores ground realities does so at her peril.

I thought Pakistan had a surplus account?

Talking about current account balances, Pakistan has now been running surpluses while India continues to run deficits for last several quarters.

given the reasons it sounds sensible to drop the project..we have many better locations available..

Well, Bhasha is under construction, but after 11 years( the estimated construction time), the energy needs will also increase many fold.

We do need to do something about this.

Kalabagh is in the feasibility studies AFAIK.

floods since last 3 years!!! electricity shortfall since 3 years & rental power porjects have been in place as well in the country!

however, no new dam has been launched in the country since 60s i believe!nor has any other electrcity generating project been launched! it is need of the hour for Pakistan to build new dams soon for electricty & for water storage.

poor planning more than anything i must say. We need to invest in Solar and Wind energy now, and make some dams as well. Nuclear is also a option. The dependence on oil should be lowered.

Why not go for Solar/Wind power project? Pakistan is a big country area wise & huge area is uninhabited, it will be clean energy.

Can any one tell me that is it possible if any one can install a solar power system at his own house, like Pakistani houses have big roof, you can make a room there & setup the system in that room & a solar panel could be placed on the roof of that room.

15000MW!!!
Do you guys know the Three Gorges Dam? The capacity of Three Gorges Dam is mere 22000MW. This is Pakistan's Three Gorges. This is God's gift to Pakistan. Why drop it?!

It is expected that electricity demand in Pakistan will rise to 35000 MW in 2020 , from 17000 MW at present with 6000 MW deficit

yea ... the negatives of the project are bigger than the positives... it will destroy the last habitat of so many endanger speicies such as various varieties of deer, wild boar, bear, rare snow leopards.... specially the snow leopards will extinct after that...
the area that will be submerged by the reservior will be so enormous that it will become a strategic risk for Pakistan. Just one missile strike on the dam and more than 2/3 of the Pakistan will be under water...

u are not the only one . even in India demand for electricity is expected to rise from 190000 MW to 400000 MW by 2020

But our production is only expected to increase from 175000 MW to 350000 MW , leading to a deficit of 50000 MW in 2020
Govt of India is planning to bridge that deficit by Investing Hydroelectric power projects in nepal and Bhutan
We are Building 6000 MW in 8 Dams across nepal and A single 10000 MW Dam in Bhutan
As per agreement 75 % of electricity generated by these projects will go to India , While Nepal and Bhutan will get free electricity from these projects

We are also investing heavily in wind energy and Plan to Triple our output of Wind Power from 13500 MW in 2010 to 40000 MW in 2020
