GREATER AUTONOMY DRIVE IN MYANMAR'S RAKHINE
13 killed in attack on police posts

Buddhist fighters' Independence Day assault takes place near Bangladesh border
Reuters, Yangon

Buddhist Rakhine insurgents killed 13 policemen and injured nine in attacks on four police posts in Myanmar's Rakhine state yesterday as the country marked Independence Day, the official news agency said.

Fighting resurged in Rakhine early last month between government forces and the rebel Arakan Army, which wants more autonomy for the Buddhist ethnic Rakhine minority.

It was also in the restive western state that a military-led crackdown in 2017 prompted hundreds of thousands of minority Rohingya Muslims to flee westwards to neighbouring Bangladesh.

The separate conflict between the military and Arakan Army rebels forced 2,500 civilians from their homes by the end of last year, according to the United Nations.

The official Myanmar News Agency said four police posts in the Buthidaung area in northern Rakhine came under attack from hundreds of Arakan Army fighters after daybreak yesterday.

Thirteen policemen were killed and nine injured as police were forced to abandon two of the posts, it said, adding that the military was now conducting a "clearance" of the area.

However, the Arakan Army spokesman denied any connection between the attacks and the anniversary.

“We are not independent yet. Today is not our Independence Day,” Khine Thu Kha said.

Myanmar military spokesman Zaw Min Tun said earlier the insurgents had hit police outposts in a rugged region near the border with Bangladesh.

"These police posts are there to protect the national races in the area so [Arakan Army rebels] shouldn't attack them," Zaw Min Tun said, referring to mostly Buddhist ethnic groups in the area who are, unlike Rohingya Muslims, considered Myanmar citizens.

Arakan Army spokesman Khine Thu Kha confirmed the assault and said rebels later retrieved the corpses of seven "enemies".

He said later that rebels had freed at least 12 members of the security forces it detained in the fighting.

The attacks, he added, came in response to a Myanmar military offensive against the Arakan Army in recent weeks that had also targeted civilians.

The Myanmar military last month announced a four-month halt to fighting in the north and northeast of the country to kick-start peace talks with multiple armed groups seeking ethnic autonomy, but that announcement excluded Rakhine state.

Friday's violence erupted shortly after the national flag was raised across the Southeast Asian country to mark 71 years since independence from Britain.

Last August a UN report accused the Myanmar military of mass killings and rapes of Rohingya with "genocidal intent" in 2017 in then operation that drove more than 700,000 of them to flee to Bangladesh, according to UN agencies.

Myanmar has denied the charges, saying its military launched a counter-insurgency operation after attacks on security posts by Muslim militants.

Um Burma has plenty of oil and gas (Especially gas though). @Aung Zaya @tarpitz

You ever heard of Burma oil?

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Burmah_Oil

Not to mention the more up to date energy industry now:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oil_and_gas_industry_in_Myanmar

@GeraltofRivia @Chinese-Dragon and I have talked about this before too.

I wouldn't really point finger at the US either "for not caring" as you put it (even running with your assertion just for arguments sake).

China is the largest investor into Myanmar right now...by far.

So you would have to scale any criticism towards the US regarding this whole thing...to larger partners of Myanmar like China and even India...first and appropriately.

Plus if you have any real issue with this, you can start opposing the JF-17 deal with Myanmar...and see for yourself if China overrules any such concerns Pakistan has with Myanmar. But it wasn't allowed to even materialise to that stage....and plenty of your compatriots simply say "money does the talking".

Then you keep going on about Haseena being a US puppet elsewhere lol. Please grow up kid.

America is damned if they care, America is damned if they don't care.

If Americans took any position on this subject, then they would have been criticized for meddling in other country's affairs in the name of 'Democracy and freedom'. Which is seen as a heinous American plot to intervene in other countries. Look at Libya, when Gaddafi was mass murdering Libyan people during the uprising in 2011, 50k people were killed by Gaddafi loyalists, Western countries were criticized for not doing anything. People were scolding, ''where are those advocates of human rights and democracy?'' But when Gaddafi was ousted by Western intervention, the same people are criticizing the West for creating anarchy in Libya by intervening there. They are now blaming the west for removing Gaddafi.

You completely missed the point. America only cares about what goes around in ME Islamic countries because they have OIL. They don't care nor will take any position on this (BD/Burma) area because there isn't any oil or valuable resource for them.

Bosnia, Cosovo had no oil. Not sure about Vietnam, N.Korea and many other places where US did intervene. Hell they even sent soldiers to Somalia/Afghanistan... :woot:
There were many reason a superpower had to act. Besides the country in question has to be weak so that they can be fully over run. I dont think USA will intervene in Uighur.

RIP to the victims.

A sigh of relief that Rohingyas didn't do this.
I have a feelings, ARSA had some helping hand in it. The pattern of attack is similar to what ARSA did in 2017

It was coming... I said it a long time ago.
If Rohingya really want a separate state they need Rakhine people in their side and keep them in front. Rohingya should never think of or aspire to rule Arakan.

RIP to the victims.

Who is victim here? The genocidal border guard police?

These genocidal monkey monks should be thrown into the seas. They r polluting this beautiful world.

.
Those who died. I am obviously not gonna cheer their death.
We cannot but sympathize with the dead Policemen who lost their lives unnecessarily. But, the ruling class in Burma is the Bamar/Burman group of people who are bullying and torturing to subjugate all other non-Bamar nationalities by brute force. This is why these nationalities are rising one by one to deny the Bamars the role of overlord.

Union of Burma is not going to last for many years as the rebels from north to south and east to west are reacting to the Bamar bullying. It is only China that is supporting the Burmese central govt. On the other hand, Bangladesh remains inactive although it is suffering from the Rohingya influx.

I hope, Arakan in the west of Yommu mountain range will rise up unitedly against the Barman/Burman overlords and separate their land by a combined effort of Muslims and Buddhists.

As well as the rebels. Shan , Kachin, karen, Wah and other various rebels have established 'free' areas spanning many thousands of sq. km size along the the Chinese and Thai borders. Their armies are each several brigade strong capable to inflict heavy damage on burmese forces. Exporting Jade and other natural resources to China is their sources of income. Without Chinese covert support these strong rebel groups could have never been possible. China use these rebel groups as a pressure tactic to extract concession from the burmese junta govt. It is a win win situation for China. I am sure China did not sent the burmese air force JF-17 figher jet recently without covertly supplying the rebels the Anti-aircraft guns also.

Bangladesh need to learn from China. Rakhine and Chin ethnic freedom fighters are looking towards Bangladesh.

It is America's own prerogative where to act and where not to. It is wrong to blame everything bad on it. Many have forgotten that during east Pakistan time it donated rice and condensed milk and provided vaccinations against many diseases including smallpox to the school children for many years at a stretch to reinstate their health although they were Muslims.

People survived. Many Muslims here could have died of malnutrition without this help and most of the people in BD are the descendants of those who survived. The US also helped us by donating long white clothes known as Markin Kapar. It saved us from remaining naked, and now after many decades, we are selling our high-quality textile products to its people that help our people to survive.

So, it is not if some countries have Muslim population that the USA strikes. It does so because of international politics and in order to subdue communism and anarchism. I would not say it does not make mistakes in the process. However, the world is more peaceful because of the US policy. Take it out of the picture every country will be at each other's throat.

My father to this day remembers the US donations of grain that helped many of us to survive in new independent India (in the 50s)....before India could grow enough food to sustain its population better.

Your statement reminded me of it.
